Blame politicians and those in charge of CFB. The players are adults who work in a lucrative entertainment business. They should be paid. The problem is that there has not been any collective bargaining. As such, there are no enforceable guidelines.
Pro leagues have collectively negotiated contracts that they honor. Players change teams but only when contract is complete/voided.
I want to watch talented players….that means they deserve to get paid. If you want to watch players play for free, then go watch middle school football where only 2-3 players on the field are actually talented.

Olave, London, or Wilson

Posted by NewBeginnings on 12/29/25 at 1:00 pm
These guys were drafted in the first round of the same draft. Each have had below average QB play for most of their careers, injuries, and losing teams. Yet, coming into this season I think most fans would have labeled Olave as the bust and the other two as budding stars.
Today, I wonder who most NFL fans would take. Below are their career stats:

London: 304 rec., 3,879 yards, 21 TD, 12.8 avg., 4 lost fumbles

Wilson: 315 rec., 3,644 yards, 18 TD, 11.6 avg., 5 lost fumbles

Olave: 291 rec., 3,728, 19 TD, 12.8 avg., 3 lost fumbles

I think a full year of Shough at QB next year is going to put Olave’s name high up on the best WR rankings.
It’s not that I want to replace him in the draft. He has a valuable role as a pass catcher. But he doesn’t block. I want a second option that is an actual Tight end who can block and run some routes. Both of them would take the offense to a new level

Must, Needs, Wants for roster

Posted by NewBeginnings on 12/28/25 at 7:27 pm
I’ve always liked how Payton and Loomis would break down what the roster needed based on these categories. Cannot fill them all in an offseason. Below are how I see the roster based on these categories:

Musts
Guards
Versatile Tight End (primary blocking but can catch some)
Run stuffing DT

Needs
Receiver who can be a 1 or 2 option
Secondary
Pass rusher
Punter

Wants
Explosive RB
I’m in the camp that you should almost never take a RB high. Estame and Neal are showing you why. You get good enough production from mid to late RB picks.
It is just not wise use of resources to use premium picks for non- premier positions.
After 20+ years I think Loomis has a consistent pattern. When the chips are down, he pulls a rabbit out of the hat. Problem is when things are going well, he seems to outsmart himself and make risky choices.

2005: Post Katrina the franchise is at its worst place.
2006: Loomis gets a great coach, QB, and makes the right choices in draft to turn around everything.

2016: Defense has been bottom of league for multiple years. Wasting Drew’s prime. Huge draft and FA busts.
2017: Best draft in NFL history. Leads to most consistent success in Saints history.

2024: Widely considered to be the worst rebuild situation in the league. Overpriced and overrated older QB that is hurt. Lots of aging veterans. Few young pieces. Best young offensive player may retire due to concussions.
2025: Miraculously finds a franchise QB in the 2nd round, has the best draft since 2017, old QB surprisingly retires and gives $$ back, and will be free and clear salary cap wise one year from now.

He is great in crisis. It’s success that he doesn’t handle well- trading picks unnecessarily, risky FA moves, etc.
I’m hoping he breaks the pattern this offseason and makes reasonable moves.
Being the bigger person and program just makes their petty anger look more ridiculous.
I would say it is more than “just a few more dollars”. If he gave TCU 4 years, then he has met any loyalty he owes them.
Most college football players will either never play pro ball or will barely serve time on a practice squad. This is the only time in their life that most will be able to profit financially off of their athletic ability. I can’t blame them.
It may seem soft but I like that it is sending the message that law enforcement officers should have more accountability. Too many of them act like they are above the law. I did not say all or most, I said too many of them. If the guy just lost his Cush game day duty and public embarrassment, it’s not enough.
As long as we do not make a ridiculous trade up, then we will be fine drafting between 10-15. Let the draft come to you.

re: Shough vs. Rattler

Posted by NewBeginnings on 12/17/25 at 9:21 am to
Shough makes professional QB throws. Rattler made way too many safe throws.

Shough anticipates. Rattler has to see the receiver open.

Shough consistently makes big throws to convert 3rd downs. Rattler’s conversion rate on 3rd and medium/long was really bad.

Shough has won games. The only game Rattler won is when the opposing team had 5 turnovers.

Less objectively, Rattler seems like a try hard robot. He’s been coached to be a QB since he was really young. He’s so technically focused that his play doesn’t feel natural. Shough seems to be naturally gifted to play QB. He makes it seem effortless whereas Rattler seems to be trying really hard.

I think Rattler is a good guy and belongs in the league but his ceiling is clearly lower.

re: Lagway to the portal

Posted by NewBeginnings on 12/15/25 at 12:41 pm to
What could make this work is that Kiffin’s system is known for giving QB’s easy reads. This could be huge for Lagway.
The concern that I have is that Kiffin’s system works best with QB’s with mobility. I don’t see him as a mobile QB. Size is a plus but he’s injury prone and running often may not be his game.

I’m excited but….

I really hope the front office keeps in mind that this team still has talent deficits that only quality drafting will remedy. The 2025 draft class is looking great and a huge part of that is we took lots of players. The front office does NOT need to do aggressive trade ups in 2026. We have a good number of picks, let the draft come to us.
Dart and Shedeur were both draft darlings. Most football fans know who they are and so it is easy content to discuss how they are doing early in their career.
Shough was unknown to fans who do not follow the NFL, draft, or college extensively.
The comp that I see is pre-injury Carson Wentz. Before he tore his acl during the Eagles first Super Bowl run, he was the presumptive MVP.
Similar size, can make all the throws look easy, mobile and uses legs but on a tier or two below Lamar Jackson.
Don’t most people change jobs based on pay?
It’s been reported that Lane has no desire to live in a cold climate. Obviously, if they doubled his pay and paid the LSU buyout, then that could change minds but that would be a 6 year/$180 million contract.
This is the most Mississippi thing ever. Mississippi politicians criticize other states and say that their lifestyle is better. Yet, for every dollar in taxes that MS pays, it receives $4 in tax revenue back from the federal government bc it is a welfare state.
Ole Miss criticizing Lane and his choices, yet accepting assistance from the same person with open arms.
At least MS is consistent.
I love the idea of trading back. But, I do t love drafting a 1st round TE. They seem to be 50/50 as 1st round prospects. Over the years, it seems they have a higher bust or meh rate than other positions. Even guys who are “can’t miss”.
I mean would any of us trade our 1st round pick for:
Kyle Pitts
Dalton Kincaid
Noah Fant
Colton Loveland

These guys are good but not worth 1st round when they were drafted.
George Kittle, Travis Kelce, McBride at Arizona, Darren Waller, Jake Ferguson- all of these guys were drafted in rounds 2-7..

Believe we will win 5 games

Posted by NewBeginnings on 12/7/25 at 7:22 pm
I was hoping for as high a draft pick as possible, but I feel confident that we will win 5 and be drafting around 9-12. The good news is:
1. We are playing almost all of our 2025 draft picks a lot. They are all flashing potential.
2. We have clearer direction regarding QB. Even if Shough doesn’t turn out to be the franchise guy, he has earned the right to develop next year wo a 1st round QB breathing down his neck.
3. Our needs are more clear. Last year we only won 5 games but did not have clear roster perspective. We were an old mess.
4. Our defense has played hard and kept us around in many games. No one seems to be mailing it in on Defense on a 3-10 team. That has to be a sign of a healthy locker room. The Jets for instance look like they have given up.
I think Lane does not want to get fired again in his career. I think he knows that if he went to Bama, that he would deal with super unreasonable expectations. Deboer won 10 games this year and was SEC runner up and they want to run him out. Lane was fired on a tarmac and run out of Tuscaloosa once when his offense led them to a national championship game. It’s never enough for those people. I think Lane will find that LSU has similar resources but if he has a 9 win season or two, he’s good.
