Better talent depth at QB
Posted by NewBeginnings on 8/15/26 at 5:13 pm
It is a huge benefit to have actual talent at backup QB spots. It makes evaluating receivers and linemen so much better.
The days of Ian Book as a preseason backup was a waste.

According to Ross Jacksom and Nick, Rattler has notably outperformed Wilson in practice.
Glad we have a former QB as HC, OC, and QB coach. I trust them to evaluate QB effectively

With podcasts, YouTube, and so many other options for sharp, informative, funny, and entertaining Saints and football talk, WWL had to do something. Back in the day, they basically had a monopoly over Saints football conversation on radio. Not so anymore.
So many hosts are way more knowledgeable and charismatic than Bobby could ever be. I haven’t wasted time listening to Bobby in at least 5 years. Even Detillier seems to give easy, lazy takes a lot of times.

I think he’s an average head coach.
He’s notably better than Dennis Allen was. Would take over: Aaron Glenn, Dolphins coach, Zac Taylor, Colts coach, and Dan Quinn.

How do you feel about passing up Field Goals
Posted by NewBeginnings on 7/22/26 at 8:24 am
Lane is known for following analytics excessively for in game decisions such as kicking a field goal or going for it on 4th. Goes for it on 4th at a high rate. I’m curious about what the rant thinks about this.
I tend to be old school in the sense that I think you should almost always kick in the first half (exception being when you are within the 5 yard line). You never know how valuable those free points maybe later in the game. Second half- going for it doesn’t bother me as much.
Two years ago, Lane and the Rebels lost to Florida. They had 4 possessions in the red zone where they chose not to kick. It was the difference in the game. If Lane loses some games for us in a similar manner, I could see some criticism from the fan base.

re: Sankey says SEC-NCAA breakaway talks are real

I’ve just seen no evidence that CFB power brokers are interested in doing collective bargaining. Collective bargaining almost always involves revenue sharing. The SEC is threatening to breakaway bc they don’t want to do revenue sharing.
CFB is desperately trying to get the Government to grant them an antitrust exemption that will allow them to operate as a non-capitalist system. This would allow them to control compensation without players having any bargaining power. The catch is it would involve revenue sharing. SEC is posturing to get the rev share piece out of the legislation. But, the system won’t work without it.
If/when that fails, CFB will either:
1. Try to get a new congress to pass their legislation.
2. Keep this unsustainable model until it implodes. Athletic departments start shutting down bc they can’t keep up with the biggest brands.
3. Move forward with collective bargaining.
Players are adults. In an American economy, you are compensated based on your talents that people are willing to pay for. College athletes are talented enough to bring billions into a system. A collective bargaining system keeps costs uniform, treats players and institutions fairly, and encourages cooperation.

Saying chippy retorts is one thing. I agree it would be more fun with Spurrier type personalities poking each other.
What Heupel did is NOT that. He openly advocated for violence against an opponent!!!
Why? Because he left Tennessee abruptly and disrespectfully over a decade ago.

I don’t see this as any type of solution. Without a collective bargaining agreement, a new super league would run into the same issues that tge NCAA has. Member schools and players do not have to abide by any guidelines because they are non-enforceable in court without collective bargaining.
The new league will not have real investigation power just like the NCAA.
I’m for shrinking the power 4 to 50-60 teams after a CBA is created between NCAA and players.

Agreed!!
Some fans are bemoaning the fact that 18-24 year olds are now being paid to work. They say it’s stealing the soul of college football.
You want to see the soul of college football die, let corporate executives control it. All they care about is profit. College athletics will dissolve into bland greed.

I agree with you. The truth is we don’t have any good moves to make. Better to make no moves than force a bad one.
The disappointment is because there doesn’t seem to be any long term plan. Dumars and Weaver are either: making it up as they go, or lie constantly (for no reason). I get subterfuge is necessary for GM’s but he literally says different things every time he speaks.
Good NBA GM’s are like chess players- they think multiple moves ahead and have counters as the board changes. Dumars seems way out of his depth

Groups steal cultural symbols from other groups when they feel their own culture is lacking.
Louisiana doesn’t need to take cultural symbols from West Virginia. There’s negative things about Louisiana but lacking in culture is not one of them.

re: This era of college football is sadly gone forever
Posted by NewBeginnings on 6/30/26 at 9:49 pm to Dirk Dawgler
The difference is that college football was making billions off of uncompensated players. If the universities were turning those profits into scholarships or education, that would be different.
What you are describing is like an apprenticeship. For example, a master carpenter takes on an 18 year old kid. Pays him next to nothing but gives him the benefit of learning the trade so that he can become a professional carpenter one day. Master carpenter deals with learning mistakes and doesn’t make a ton of money from the inexperienced kid working under him.
That is not what college football was. It was 18-22 year olds with elite talent already. They just couldn’t be compensated for it bc the system kept their profit.

You just called the American way of life moronic. In our culture, people want to be compensated for the work that they do with $$.
If your employer offered you:
A: triple your salary
B: free college tuition and a personal trainer to improve your health.
Which would you choose?

re: How many years does Coach Pete Golding last at Ole Miss
Posted by NewBeginnings on 6/24/26 at 5:58 pm to ManBearSharkReb
That’s kind of my point…you develop them for a year or two and then they transfer.
LSU will have 3 o line starters this year that they just got in the portal.
Ole Miss has a 5 star who went to LSU as a freshman.
The system may change to restrict unlimited transfers but as it is now, it’s risky to depend on HS recruiting unless your a blue blood that can pay for them to develop/not play.

Even if your HS recruiting has improved, that is not the benefit it once was. If a 5 or 4 star doesn’t like their playing time or believe they can do better at another school, they transfer.

It does. His earliest entrance into the NFL is the 2027 draft.
Someone said his only options to play before then is either the CFL or the UFL.

Appreciate different viewpoints. My response to your responses:
1 and 3. Teams have less practice time than ever before. Realistically, it’s not possible to adequately develop QB prospects 2-3 at a time. It’s why most teams get a young prospect and an older veteran (ie Mendoza and Cousins in LV). By crowding the room with similar talents, you run the high possibility of no one developing. QB development seems to be the secret sauce in the NFL right now. Several QB’s who were “busts” on the team that drafted them are quality starters on other teams. The talent is there for Shough. Just needs patience and support….not competition that causes him to overthink.
2. I’m a mental health professional. Gambling addiction is a real diagnosis as of 2013. You may not believe it but there’s people who still don’t believe clinical depression or ADHD is real. There’s people who think the world is flat or only 6,000 years old. People can choose to not believe scientific, factual evidence. I just hope that the Saints leaders are people who make calculated decisions based on known facts. The facts in this situation are that this young man likely has an untreated addiction and is seeking to be in the middle of temptation. It is highly unlikely that he will not relapse.

Definitely do not want-
1. It would negatively affect Shough’s development. Shough may or may not be the future. But, if you take a bold step to bring in a young QB right behind him, it cannot be a confidence builder. He has done everything to earn trust since he got to New Orleans. This would be spitting in his face.
2. I have nothing against the kid, but let’s be real. He only admitted to his issue when he was caught, went to a 30 day rehab, and has suffered very few repercussions other than not getting to finish college. When someone is an addict, the worst thing for them is to be bailed out from consequences. There has to be some pain in order to motivate recovery. Whatever NFL team gets him is likely going to be in a gambling scandal. I don’t want that to be the Saints.
3. He’s more of a gifted runner than a passer at this stage of his development. For him to improve, he needs the full focus on his development. How would that happen when you have two other young QB’s- Shough and Rattler who need development.

If I was a non- conference lower level that Tech contacted about coming to Lubbock for a $$ win, I would demand a hefty increase for the trouble. If they normally pay $800,000 then I would call for $5-$10 million. They balk at that, no big deal. Plenty of other P4 schools that need a non conference opponent. If every small school did this, Tech would really second guess what they be done.

Ole Miss fans probably shouldn’t comment about local judges ruling in favor of QB’s who clearly broke the rules.
