Groups steal cultural symbols from other groups when they feel their own culture is lacking.
Louisiana doesn’t need to take cultural symbols from West Virginia. There’s negative things about Louisiana but lacking in culture is not one of them.
The difference is that college football was making billions off of uncompensated players. If the universities were turning those profits into scholarships or education, that would be different.

What you are describing is like an apprenticeship. For example, a master carpenter takes on an 18 year old kid. Pays him next to nothing but gives him the benefit of learning the trade so that he can become a professional carpenter one day. Master carpenter deals with learning mistakes and doesn’t make a ton of money from the inexperienced kid working under him.

That is not what college football was. It was 18-22 year olds with elite talent already. They just couldn’t be compensated for it bc the system kept their profit.
You just called the American way of life moronic. In our culture, people want to be compensated for the work that they do with $$.

If your employer offered you:
A: triple your salary
B: free college tuition and a personal trainer to improve your health.

Which would you choose?
That’s kind of my point…you develop them for a year or two and then they transfer.
LSU will have 3 o line starters this year that they just got in the portal.
Ole Miss has a 5 star who went to LSU as a freshman.
The system may change to restrict unlimited transfers but as it is now, it’s risky to depend on HS recruiting unless your a blue blood that can pay for them to develop/not play.
Even if your HS recruiting has improved, that is not the benefit it once was. If a 5 or 4 star doesn’t like their playing time or believe they can do better at another school, they transfer.

It does. His earliest entrance into the NFL is the 2027 draft.
Someone said his only options to play before then is either the CFL or the UFL.
Appreciate different viewpoints. My response to your responses:

1 and 3. Teams have less practice time than ever before. Realistically, it’s not possible to adequately develop QB prospects 2-3 at a time. It’s why most teams get a young prospect and an older veteran (ie Mendoza and Cousins in LV). By crowding the room with similar talents, you run the high possibility of no one developing. QB development seems to be the secret sauce in the NFL right now. Several QB’s who were “busts” on the team that drafted them are quality starters on other teams. The talent is there for Shough. Just needs patience and support….not competition that causes him to overthink.
2. I’m a mental health professional. Gambling addiction is a real diagnosis as of 2013. You may not believe it but there’s people who still don’t believe clinical depression or ADHD is real. There’s people who think the world is flat or only 6,000 years old. People can choose to not believe scientific, factual evidence. I just hope that the Saints leaders are people who make calculated decisions based on known facts. The facts in this situation are that this young man likely has an untreated addiction and is seeking to be in the middle of temptation. It is highly unlikely that he will not relapse.
Definitely do not want-
1. It would negatively affect Shough’s development. Shough may or may not be the future. But, if you take a bold step to bring in a young QB right behind him, it cannot be a confidence builder. He has done everything to earn trust since he got to New Orleans. This would be spitting in his face.

2. I have nothing against the kid, but let’s be real. He only admitted to his issue when he was caught, went to a 30 day rehab, and has suffered very few repercussions other than not getting to finish college. When someone is an addict, the worst thing for them is to be bailed out from consequences. There has to be some pain in order to motivate recovery. Whatever NFL team gets him is likely going to be in a gambling scandal. I don’t want that to be the Saints.

3. He’s more of a gifted runner than a passer at this stage of his development. For him to improve, he needs the full focus on his development. How would that happen when you have two other young QB’s- Shough and Rattler who need development.
I’m going to call foul on Ric Flair (Tennessee). I get that your list was sports icons but let’s not pretend like that form of wrestling is legitimate sport. I get that it’s athletes but they are performing in a scripted drama.
If I was a non- conference lower level that Tech contacted about coming to Lubbock for a $$ win, I would demand a hefty increase for the trouble. If they normally pay $800,000 then I would call for $5-$10 million. They balk at that, no big deal. Plenty of other P4 schools that need a non conference opponent. If every small school did this, Tech would really second guess what they be done.
Ole Miss fans probably shouldn’t comment about local judges ruling in favor of QB’s who clearly broke the rules.

You suggested forming a regulation and enforcement policy wo the federal government.

This would run into the same interference that the NCAA faces. Players would sue against any enforcement and would win. To stabilize the system, you have to have an antitrust system (only the government can grant that) or collectively bargain with players (involve revenue splits, rights, etc.).
The amateur model was illegal. We cannot go back. Giving players a small token of the revenue will not work either.

Pete Rose was an official employee. College athletes are in a weird position where they are compensated but not employees.
Companies can enforce policies against employees. Quasi-compensated non-employees can go to court to get a friendly judge to rule in their favor.
Unions and collective bargaining is and always has been the solution
While they will never admit it, the person who deserves the most credit is Kiffin. When Kiffin came in 2020, the football program was in the gutter after probation and Matt Luke. Money from football creates revenue for the whole athletic department. The excitement generated from Kiffin coming and then turning around the football team quickly led to the financial ability to support other sports in the NIL-era.
I like how Ole Miss fans want to credit their AD, pulling in same direction, and donors, but the elephant in the room is that Kiffin was the key. If the football team nosedives, then athletic revenue will suffer for all sports. It’s a lot more precarious than they want to believe. In terms of future relevance, they are closer to Ms State athletics than LSU, Texas, Georgia, and A/M.

1st and 2nd round picks

Posted by NewBeginnings on 5/26/26 at 11:26 am
Random offseason thoughts- we have quietly accumulated a high number of 1st and 2nd rounders on offense and have few on defense.

Offense
Shough- 2nd
Etienne- 1st
Olave- 1st
Tyson- 1st
McCoy- 2nd
Banks- 1st
Fuaga- 1st
Ruiz- 1st
Fant- 1st
Polk- 2nd

Defense
Young- 1st
Breese- 1st
Wilson- 1st
McKinstry- 2nd
Werner- 2nd
Miller- 2nd

If my count is accurate that is 10 on offense and 6 on defense. If Cam comes back, the defense will have 7. Takeaways-
1. Interesting to consider how teams are constructed. Offensive head coach= talent accumulation on that side.
2. Defense definitely did more with less on defense. Hoping to do the same this year.
3. Free agency and draft next year will likely be heavy on defense.
Google search just showed the following:

11% of student body at Ole Miss is black
Nearly 40% of the population of the state of Mississippi is black.

LINK
Definitely not true. Ole Miss has the lowest % in the state of Mississippi by a considerable amount. Less than 10% for a state that is 40+% black.
Football games seem to be a pretty diverse place in general. I’ve been to games at 8 different schools. Been to 3-4 Ole Miss games. They are different than other schools in terms of diversity in the crowd. You literally have to search for a black Ole Miss fan in the stands.
I read on ESPN that he is 30 and will be 31 when season starts. If the price is right for a 1-2 year deal, it could be good. He is better as a zone CB and so I think Staley could use him. Declining player but useful for us
If he’s looking for a pay day (unlikely at this point in off season) and not holding out for a contender, we could use him.
It makes sense that Wade is building the roster this way. The best players in the NBA are international players for the most part ( Jokic, Giannis, Luka, Shia- Gilgeous, Embid, Wemby, etc). The scouting landscape for basketball is literally worldwide. It was a matter of time before college basketball went fully after international players once NIL became possible.
This could really elevate the quality of play in college basketball overall.
I think with the increased depth that they will only have 2 QB’s on the active roster. I think they will pickup a young QB to be on the practice squad.
My point on trading one of Rattler or Wilson is that neither of those guys would stay on the practice squad. They would get picked up.
The state of the QB position in the league is not great after the top 16 QB’s. I think some folks think Rattler doesn’t belong in the NFL. He will likely not be a franchise QB, but he absolutely is as talented as Chase Daniel. Chase Daniel always had a backup job

re: Wishlist for rest of offseason

I had not heard that about Snead. I just did a google search and didn’t see any news about retirement. It may be the case, but public info says he’s a free agent hoping to sign.

As for the last two points, I said it was a wishlist. Not a prediction. On his Friday podcast, Nick Underhill even mentioned the Carr to Pittsburgh possibility if Rodgers doesn’t come back.
