In Vietnamese culture, rice is synonymous with meal/lunch/dinner. So rice easily for me. You can eat it with beef, pork, chicken, fish, lamb or any veggies, make noodles, rice papers, desserts, wine, vinegar, sticky rice, porridge. If rice didn’t exist tomorrow, half of all Asia would riot.

Growing up in east Alabama, we were pretty evenly split. My mom liked rice, so maybe we had more of it, until we got a Fry Daddy.
But why not both? The Peruvians make lomo saltdado, beef marinated in vinegar and soy sauce, stir fried with peppers and onions in the marinade, then it's all poured over French fries with a side of rice. There are also pollo saltado and saltade de camarones options too.

Because it’s a versus thread. Reading posts in this thread shows how much of an impact of eating at a young age affects your food preference and emotional connections. You grow up eating potatoes, in general you prefer potatoes. Likewise with rice.

And if you grew up eating both and like both, then it's more of a dish/cuisine pairing issue. Nothing more. But thanks for the detailed explanation.

We are definitely more of a rice household.
I have a large restaurant storage container that holds 50lbs of rice. And a Cuckoo brand rice cooker. Most mornings I wash two cups of medium grain supreme, toss it in the rice cooker with chicken stock and two tablespoons of olive oil and there is rice ready throughout the day.
Why? Side effect of eating what's basically the same diet day in day out all through college and for the next 18 years
Simple carbs, protein, veg, fruit, and healthy fats I say that's the main reason why my blood work has always been a thing of beauty, even as a fat arse.
Edit to add, grew up eating way more potatoes. Why? My paw paw planted potatoes twice a year. Red potatoes and "Arsch" (Irish) potatoes He'd plant 4 100ft rows of each. Do you have any god damned idea how many potatoes that is to pick? He had a lean-to across the entire back of his shop with a double roof. And potatoes would cover the ground across all 50x10 of it.
I love potatoes, especially the nutrient density when grown in tilled Louisiana black jack, but I just don't have the time to do it.

Rice first, but also like potatoes just for a change.

Rice is better for some dishes, potatoes better for others.

Both.
S. La dishes, Asian dishes, Spanish dishes, Beef Tips, Chuck Roast all go over rice.
Pork Chops, Country Fried Steak, French dishes all go over potatoes.
As a true side potatoes are the more versatile. Baked, boiled, roasted, fried, smashed...just far more versatile.
I have at least one with every meal if we count sweet potatoes. If not every meal then at least 5-6 times per week. Weekly grocery runs always include a 3-4LB bag of russets, 2-3 large sweet potatoes, and 1-LB of rice.

Mississippi transplant. Grew up eating both regularly, and I have no problem with and no preference for either. The gravy better be correct though.

Family are yankees, moved to BR right before I started kindergarten First day getting served RBR in the cafeteria was wild to little me. Anyway, potatoes were most common in our house. I learned to appreciate rice along with everything else in LA. Old me is probably 50/50 rice v potatoes. Still prefer potatoes with gravy but don't mind it with rice either.
