Rice versus potatoes: explain yourself

Do you have a rational or irrational preference?
Growing up close to the prairie rice paddies of Stuttgart AR, good rice was always available and often served even though Mom usually scorched it or cursed it boiling over. Once I adopted TX in-laws I found that some people viewed rice-eaters as undesirables... only potato under their gravy.
I think preference has a lot to do with crop geography and what mom found reliable on the stove.
In Louisiana I expect a overwhelming preference for rice as the major starch. Are there any Potato fanatics who would like to make a contrary statement?

I grew up in SE LA and rice was what we usually had.
SwLA same thing.
Those folks around Alexandria and Monroe and Shreveport? Potato humpers

I like potatoes too. Potato chips, hash browns, tater tots, and of course French fries fried in duck fat. Vodka made with potatoes is great too.

It all depends on the dishes being prepared, at least in my family. An oven roast is usually rice, a slow cooker pot roast is usually potatoes. Gumbo is always over rice, although you may put potato salad in or on the side. Something like poboys have potato salad or potato chips as a side. Baked chicken goes with roasted potatoes, but chicken stew is probably over rice. Etc.

You can eat more potatos than rice for the calories.
Plus the Nutritional desnity of a potato.
Potatos fill you the F up.
Which is great if you are watching what you eat.

I grew up eating far more rice than potatoes and still do, but to me, potatoes are more versatile and I like them too.
I'd be hard pressed to have to choose just one over the other.

I like both but I know what you mean about Texans, although its usually north, west and central texans that don't eat much rice. I'm from Beaumont and dated a girl who's family were rice farmers and rice farms were all around my high school.

Mom grew up eating rice with every meal. After she married Dad, he told her after a few short months that rice did not in fact need to be served at every meal.
if it had gravy, we had rice. Mom never made homemade mashed potatoes. We did have roasted potatoes and occasionally baked potatoes. Boxed Au Gratins were served pretty frequently as well.

I eat rice about 3 to 4 times a week, as a side item to whatever I’m eating.
I doubt I eat potatoes three times a month.
Never really thought about it. Is that a Louisiana thing?

Originally from the midwest where meat and taters were king. Not a lot of rice eaten up there, so I'm a tater guy myself, but won't say no to rice if that was being served instead.

Rice for all stews, gumbo and pot roast. Sometimes I even eat chilli over rice. We eat more potato salad and smothered potatos than mashed potatos.

Grew up in PA & VA. I don't remember eating rice often growing up, although when my mother made stuffed cabbage or bell peppers and they had rice as an ingredient.
I probably prefer potatoes, but rice has its place and eat it often in many dishes.

Rice.
I do like a baked potato with a steak or burger and hashbrown with a weekend breakfast.

Doesn’t this all just come down to geography and water table levels?
I’ve lived all over the lower 48. Rice is more ubiquitous in Louisana than anywhere else. Excluding maybe a few Chinatowns.
Rid is not a viable substitute for potatoes in the the country, it’s not even an either/or thing. Potatoes are dominant.
Me, I like rice 2-3 times a week as a complement to whatever else I’m cookin.

Central Alabama here. Feel like we have a pretty even split. Probably end up eating more rice though

Grew up with my whole family farming rice, we ate rice 5-6 times a week. Now I’m a rice farmer and still like rice but I really like potatoes sometimes I eat rice and gravy with potatoes. I would assume Louisiana likes rice more and places like Texas choose potatoes.
