Lots of potatoes this time of year due to garden harvest, so we eat more of those.

Rice is probably my least favorite starch. I won’t turn it down. But give me potatoes, pasta or bread any day over rice.

Sometimes I do a cheesy, broth-flavored grits/polenta with stews instead of rice, potatoes, or pasta.

Potatoes besides certain potato casseroles, french fries and lyonnaise potatoes are freaking gross

This is me, except not big on many things served on top of/mixed into potatoes either. I prefer than standalone.
I'd pick grits, polenta, or cornbread as my base over rice or potatoes any day. I actually eat my beans and my gumbo with no base at all. I don't find they need it, and rice kinda "waters down" the rich flavor of the dish for me.
That said, I still cook and eat both rice and potatoes weekly.

I don’t care for rice flavor-wise anlthough it’s okay, and think mashed potatoes should be its own food group I love it so much.

Yeah, my kids were raised on LG rice, and during the kung flu virus the wife bought MG rice and the kids snubbed it.
