I enjoyed baby ipa and hops in the dark (or whatever the black ipa was called).
i think i liked the black ipa better but both were really good imo

Fad? No.. I don't think so. IPAs and their ever-growing hoppiness are here to stay, imo. A lot of beer nerds are complete hopheads.. not that there's anything wrong with that
Blown out of proportion and often too hoppy for me? Yes. I like a good IPA or DIPA, but I can't drink lots of them. The bitter becomes too much. I prefer a really good stout, sour, or Belgian dubbel or quad.

Nah I mean after 2-3 regular IPAs I get tired of that flavor. Sometimes I struggle to finish a full pint of something like Enjoy By. It's not nasty, I just get tired of the bitter.

I love IPA's and chicory tastes like shite to me. It ruins coffee.

Yes, I know. You were acknowledging that the derivative of the two were comparable and due to lack of technology and when said technology progressed, one was abolished and the other was not. Im saying the one was not becuase it doesnt taste like shite like the other. YMMV

Hopitoulas is bitter. A bad bitter.
I don't like IPAs with that lingering bitterness on the finish. Can't stand them. But ones that are bitter on the front and clean on the finish...oh yes, I love them.

Yeah, at least not this last batch. I find it pretty refreshing.
That said, I've definitely had a few IPAs that were so bitter I had to power through to finish. And I completely understand not being "in the mood" for them. If I drank too much the night before and I'm getting a beer at lunch, I am generally avoiding that bitter/dry taste.

I should add: I like IPAs just fine. I can certainly detect hop subtlety and nuances without a problem. That being said, I think that belgian styles are way more interesting with various saisons probably topping my preference. The unfortunate (or maybe fortunate?) part of this is that saison has become pretty wildly varied in what makes a saison. Lots of american breweries just start adding adjuncts and crazy wild yeasts and such into them and you end up with some stuff that I wouldn't really think of as a "saison." Still a really interesting style, imo.
As to the original statement: it seems that sours are the current hot beer style.

Enjoy By is my favorite IPA available in LA. As mentioned, try to drink it long before its posted "enjoy by" date.

It's not bitter in a bad way. Obviously Enjoy By is a very, very good beer. It's just a very hoppy beer, and my palate gets tired of that nonstop hop attack.

I really don't pay much attention to what the trends are. However I guess in the redneck meth haven I live in I see Bud Light is still all the rage.
