I'm late to this thread, but my feelings are this:

IPA is not a fad. It is a legitimate beer style, and one of the oldest traditional beer styles brewed today. Some here claim they don't like it because it tastes like pine sol. Well, that's because your taste buds haven't acquired the taste for it yet. I hated them when i tried my first IPA years ago. Now, it is by far my favorite style. And to say they all taste the same just shows you don't have the palate for it yet. Hops are a wonderful plant. They impart a varying array of different aromas and flavors. Once you have enough hoppy pale ales, and hops, you will begin to crave more, and then you will be able to distinguish more flavors from each hop. Just give it time. IPA's are definitely an acquired taste. But once acquired, they become addictive.

What a load of BS. Statements like this are where the phrase "beer snob" came from. I liked IPAs from the first time I tried one.

Some people just don't like beers with a ton of hops. There's nothing wrong with that. I used to be really into IPAs of all types. No beer could be too hoppy. But it got old and I'm just not that into super hopped out beers anymore. People have different tastes. Get over it.

I didn't like beer when I first tried it, but I eventually grew to like it. I didn't like IPAs when I first tried them, but I do now. That has nothing to do with snobbery. What an asinine statement.

What?

Explain coffee, beer in general (yes, even Bud Light), sushi, etc.

Most (yes, there are exceptions) people hate these things the first couple times they try them. Generally, people didn't just take a gulp of coffee for the first time and decide "Yep, I'm addicted". They worked their way into liking it.

When you were a kid and you took a sip of dad's beer, you probably didn't like it. I remember forcing Budweiser down when I was in HS because I wanted to drink, but I hated the taste. Eventually, I got used to it.

Yes, people have different tastes. And some may never like IPAs. But it is definitely something you work yourself into because it is a mass hit of bitterness.

I liked beer and coffee from day one. Sushi was an acquired taste/texture for me but now I love it. My main point was that some people (not necessarily in this thread) act as if you can't like "good beer" if you don't like IPAs. Some of these people won't even consider a beer if it's not some form of an IPA. I think many beer noobs love IPAs because it's definitely NOT Bud Light, if you know what I mean. It's new and very different to them. I know I was that way, but the hop explosion type beers got old. I still like them if I'm in the right mood, though.

I'm right in the middle of researching whether or not IPAs are disgusting.

I have tried many, many IPAs of all sorts, and have not been able to prove that they are disgusting, yet. I believe that many more years of research are probably needed...

I don't see how this is possible, given where you live...

ETA: You can always come to Portland, and I will be happy to show you where you can get try some of the stuff I'm doing research on.
