Eric Berger is going off on how Houston needs to be saying prayers of thanks we dodged this one. Says the city is completely unprepared for a storm like Laura and this should be the warning shot to push the city into action

The NHC never once said it was going to Houston. What did he want them to do? Mass evacuate when it wasn’t necessary?

NOAA uses the SLOSH model which is very rudimentary. They predict storm surge at a very unresolved level which doesnt take into account every landform which may locally influence water levels and then they just overlay water these coarse water level predictions with a refined digital elevation (terrain) model

Last night we were gathering data points from a bucket with a chain tied to the ocean floor. This sounds like improvement to me.

You're basically asking for the largest infrastructure overhaul in history. There's only so much you can do to stop mother nature

New recon inbound and it's likely to find a still strengthening system give clearing eye and strong mesovort signatures in the eyewall.

Figured you were at least close to the process.

I'm sure I'm going to spend a good hour digging into those forecasts after lunch.

Actually put the infrastructure in place in case something like this does hit the city directly

How much money would it take for someone to ride the storm out atop the shaky I-10 bridge in Lake Charles?

Good luck getting that done with the people who will be in charge of Houston from now until the rest of time.

He also argues the city needs stronger building codes to withstand strong winds. And things like mandatory shutters when building, etc.

Traffic wasn’t an issue last night we left Sulphur at 8:30 and got to Frisco at 2:30. It wasn’t an issue this morning, and dad just left for Lafayette and said nobody is on the road. I know a lot of people weren’t evacuating early so I’m guessing there’s still a lot riding it out.
