FPI Explained:
quote:

The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 20,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily. FPI data from seasons prior to 2019 may not be complete.

Ah yes, the brilliant ESPN FPI. The same metric that had LSU ranked 3rd at the end of their perfect, 15-0 2019 season. Behind Ohio State and Clemson. I'm sure it's an extremely accurate predictor of the best teams before a single game has even been played. /s

Actually, that was Bill Connelly's SP+, another flawed ESPN metric that ignores common sense.

If you click the link at the top of the article, you can see the FPI rankings every year going back to 2005. 2019 does indeed have LSU ranked 3rd.

Yeah but at least ND has made a pair of playoff games in the last few years and has played in a natty this century. When’s the last time PSU even finished top 4 or 5 in the national?

You know with just a half-arse defense we'd be in the top 10.
