he American Civil Liberties Union said Friday it will sue the Trump administration next week over its decision to declare a national emergency to fund hundreds of miles of border wall between the U.S. and Mexico.

The American Civil Liberties Union announced hours after President Trump's remarks in the White House Rose Garden Friday morning that it is drafting a challenge.

“By the president’s very own admission in the Rose Garden, there is no national emergency. He just grew impatient and frustrated with Congress, and decided to move along his promise for a border wall ‘faster,'" ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero said in a statement. "This is a patently illegal power grab that hurts American communities and flouts the checks and balances that are hallmarks of our democracy."

quote:

We will be filing a lawsuit early next week," the group added. "As the country’s premier defender of civil liberties and civil rights, the ACLU will always fight to ensure a robust system of checks and balances on the power of the executive, which is critical to safeguarding our democracy and defending rights.

How exactly does having a secure border "hurt" American communities.

So let me get this straight.

Dems vote to fund a wall under Bush.

Dems vote to fund a wall under Obama.

Dems vote to fund a wall under Trump.

ACLU is now claiming a wall violates civil rights?

Good luck with that.

All I hear nowadays, is the word sue. Why does everyone want to sue now?

The checks and balances thing kills me.

The statute that authorizes the President to declare an emergency was passed by the Congress.

The same statute affords the Congress the opportunity to override the declaration.

If they can find the votes to do it, fine.

If they cannot, then STFU.

Should it end up before some judge somewhere, they should say the same thing if they understand their role in the checks and balances system.

There is very little down side. If you lose the case nothing happens to you. If you win there is a big pay out. In Britain, if you sue and lose, you have to pay the legal fees of the other party.

Immigration will still continue: LEGAL immigration. The Wall doesn’t stop this, and should, I’m fact, encourage it

ILLEGAL immigration is what is being corrected here

Can you link us to these property owners who think they own land at the literal country border? I need a laugh.

there is at least a 60 foot easment along the the entire border. You can't really use that for anything anyway. The government owns the border. Oh wait, this is juice Terry. frick off and die

Depending on the case, American courts follow the English system. Hell, just recently, Stormy Daniels had to pay Trump's legal fees (nearly $300,000) in a failed defamation suit.
