No Recess in Middle School?

One of my kids started 6th grade this year, and apparently there's no recess. When they finish their lunch, they just sort of hang out in the cafeteria. And they get PE once per week.
No wonder half these kids are fricking fatasses.
Curious if this is common. My middle school years were practically structured around "smear the queer" and football with a tennis ball.

Recesses have been cut back in all grades. It’s a damn shame.

I wasn't in middle school nearly 40 years ago, and we didn't have recess

Yeah.... recess ended in 5th grade. 6th you started pe/band/choir. If you chose PE you had that for an hour every day.
Pretty sure that’s SOP

Or those big red textured balls. Those frickers could sail with a well placed kick'

Schools started cancelling "smear the queer" games when they realized that almost all of their male teachers are queer.

I only had recess in elementary school.

We played smear the queer through 8th grade. A lot of ripped uniform shirts and a few fights, but there weren't too many obese kids back then.

Middle school late 1970's: 10 recess in morning, 30 minutes minimum after lunch, 10 minutes mid-afternoon. That's a lot of queer smearin'! And if your teacher was cool, PE was tacked on after the afternoon recess. Kickball with those purple/red utility balls.
Run home at 3:00 for a half bag of oreos and milk with Gilligan's Island on the TV then off to football or baseball or basketball practice depending on the season.

We got to spend 20 minutes outside after lunch in middle school. Not sure I'd consider that recess though.

No more recess and it sucks for the kids. My daughter timed it, by the time she got her food she had 8 minutes to eat. That's not nearly enough time. Kids need more time to burn off energy.

It’s a shame and the reason half these kids are “diagnosed” with ADD and ADHD. They are forced to sit in a classroom for 8 hours a day with no breaks other than lunch. Then they go home and sit behind a computer all night. These kids need to run around for a while and wear themselves out but the school system doesn’t let them.

So you ran away from kids all recess?

We had "lunch" that I guess was around 45 minutes or so, after you ate you could leave the cafeteria and hangout in the "commons" which was this cement courtyard with a few vending machines and benches.
ETA: I want to say that I had PE every grade until sophomore year.

Had recess through 8th grade i believe. But most of me and my classmates stopped "playing" by 6th / 7th grade and it was more of a "break" in that we would just hang out and shoot the breeze.
Had PE every day I think.

Graduated 8th grade in ‘94 and we had two recesses every day. Had a 15 min recess between 2nd and 3rd period and then a 30 min recess after lunch between 5th and 6th period.
I was pretty shocked when I looked at my 3rd graders schedule and saw that their TOTAL time for lunch and recess was 35 minutes. They get 20 minutes for lunch and 15 mins for recess. My wife and I were both pretty shocked when we saw that.
