We’ll talk about TWOW when Ned returns from the South.

GRRM gives update on WoW

quote:

“The show has achieved such popularity around the world, the books have been so popular and so well reviewed, that every time I sit down I’m very conscious I have to do something great, and trying to do something great is a considerable weight to bear,” Martin said. “On the other hand, once I really get rolling, I get into the world. The rest of the world vanishes, and I don’t care what I’m having for dinner, what movies are on, what my email says or who’s mad at me this week because The Winds of Winter isn’t out – all that is gone and I’m just living in the world I’m writing about. But it’s sometimes hard to get to that almost trance state.”

sorry George, but that "weight to bear" is probably from last night's pizza crawl

Not as much weight as the chair you sit on.

I understand his point, tho. Ppl are expecting a masterpiece and he will be blasted worse if they don’t think he delivered.

Some of the later books are arguably not really masterpiece material. The series' literary reputation has pretty much been cemented at this point by the earlier books. The only thing that could hurt it is if the last book (or books) really really sucked. Or, if he never gets around to finishing the dang thing.

Sure...but do you think that pressure from fans expecting a "masterpiece" has increased or decreased over the last 7 going on 8 years between novels?

One would think more time might equal a better book...so, at this point he's doing it to himself.

This was a half arse excuse when used as the show passed him up years ago. If you take 4 times as long to write the book people are going to assume it's because you are trying to pump out a masterpiece.

Let's pull the pity-penis out of our collective mouths for a sec, cuz I actually found some new (I think) full-on crackpipe fodder...

Deep within a youtube wormhole, I found a video "something something reasons why / hints that Arya kills the Mountain" it wasn't all that convincing TBH, and was bigly based on obscure quotes from the show only ..but THIS comment sounded like it belonged among our more distinguished brain-farts:

quote:

The biggest clue is in the meeting between The Hound and The Mountain when Sandor tells him he's always known who was going to kill him.

(This must refer to the Dragon-Pit Summit, S7, Sandor meets UnGregor)
quote:

Unless you believe Sandor is suddenly a flame-reading savant, he's always had that gift. That's why he fears fire, he's afraid of what he sees. Gregor didn't burn him over some toy, he shoved his head into the fire for telling him he would be killed by a little girl.

I likey.
I likey alot.
quote:

This is also why Sandor takes her in and helps train her/keep her alive.

Mmmmmm. Okay. I would've left that part out...or at least qualified it with, "Even after he realized he wouldn't collect any reward coin for doing so."

Makes me think either Clegane Bowl = Red Viper vs Mountain II, and with similar results, and Arya (with Qyburn's face) ends Gregor afterward...
Or
She kills him straight-up wearing Sandor's face. (Yeah, don't see that one winning any votes, either)
Anyhoo,
Enjoy.

Is anybody reading Blood & Fire? I'm about 25% through and enjoying it. I'll preface by saying I know many are refusing to buy it because they are tired of GRRM delaying. I agree, but I couldn't help myself. I am enjoying being back in the world again. It reads like a history textbook in which the historians basically recorded every event and conversation within earshot. I am surprised at how many small houses and names I am recognizing and immediately picturing the area on the map of where they are. There have already been a few things that foreshadow events in the main storyline.

It's a very long book, and I'm not sure if the "nostalgia" will hold on long enough to finish, but I am looking forward to heading upstairs to bed each night to continue reading.

I’m a little past halfway through. I love it. Not sure exactly where you are, but there’s a part in between all that political intrigue where I found myself thinking, “oh shite! Are we finally about to find out what the frick happened there?” I don’t want to spoil what “there” is, but you’ll know what I’m talking about when you get to it... if you haven’t figured it out through the context of this post.

I think I'm not to whatever you are talking about. The most blatant foreshadowing I've caught so far has to do with dragon eggs.

It’s a win-win for him now. If the show’s finale bombs, fans will be clamoring for the “True Ending” and he can gain even more fame/fortune. If the finale is great, he can hang his hat with a “Yup that’s how I would have ended it” and have a ghost writer finish a novelization while he stands alone as a champion for incest.

Or the show ends with a mediocre ending and he could only do worse.

Maybe new theory:
The Knight of the Laughing Tree was Howland Reed warged by Bran Stark.

Evidence:
Jojen suggests the knight may not have been a crannogman.
The knight went to the Isle of Faces for a year, communicating with the Children of the Forest.
The knight was of small stature.
His armor was pieced together and ill-fitting.
His shield painting was of a Weirwood.
The Reeds are shocked Bran was never told of the story by Ned Stark.
Ned maintained a lifelong affinity for Howland.

Theory is that Bran Stark had been communicating with Reed through the weirwoods on the IoF, using a lot of energy (shouting) to make the trees whisper. Bran tells Reed of the future, and his children's role in Bran's own past/future.

Reed goes to the tourney, gets bullied, and prays to Bran. Working with the Starks, Reed enters the lists as KotLT. Bran skinchanges into Reed, defeating the three knights. His voice, from Reed's mouth, is of the booming variety. Reed tells all to Eddard, who trusts Reed to do his duty sending his children when the time is right.

I’m reading it. The historical narrative makes it harder to get wrapped up in. I am 40% done after a couple weeks. If this was TWOW, I would have been done in a couple days.

However, there is humor in this, some pretty creative deaths, a lot of connecting of the dots, and I want a copy of Mushroom’s book lol.

Mother-in-law got me Blood & Fire for Chriatmas. I like the format of the storytelling, actually. I have a few 12 hour flight segments I'll probably try to get through it in.

frick GRRM.

I just got to the beginning of the dance with dragons actual war. The build up was interesting. Although, the further they get from Aegon the Conqueror, the harder it is to remember who is who. I understand GRRM is trying to make it realistic by having characters named after other characters, but I could probably use some sort of chart.
