I know the short answer to why suicide is considered wrong is because the Bible says it is. Outside of the biblical argument though, what makes it such a bad thing?

That you state and believe this tells us all we need to know about you, you twisted little freak.

one of the things about depression is that you're terrified of being a burden to other people. it's one of the reasons why so few people reach out for help and instead put on a front and try to make everything seem OK. They're not thinking rationally. It's also not a decision somebody usually makes in 5 minutes, they've probably been fighting it for years. It's easy in grief and frustration to say that a loved one who did it was a coward or selfish. I used to do the same before I really thought it through. I'm guessing most of the time they're just done with fighting it for so long and lose the fight. One of the things that probably keeps them fighting is considering their loved ones. I tend to withhold judgement on folks now, especially after I lost a uncle I was close to from it. It's hard to imagine the mental anguish somebody has to be going through to do that. Life is probably a living hell for them even if everything looks OK from the outside.

I know this isn't always the case but it's been my experience with it.

Nope, not yet. I had the same thought, but unless he had money stashed away somewhere, he isn't still amongst the living.

It’s the last thing anyone will ever remember about you. Stealing that quote from Yellowstone. That’s the truth.

I'm not a high risk for ALS, but yeah, I wouldn't stick around for that one.

He was probably depressed but one common aspect of people that decide to end their life is once they decide, they can be happy as can be. They have their solution to depression and no longer have to worry about it.

Norm Macdonald : Do you think this would be funny, just as a practical joke, if you just wrote a suicide note and just blamed some random guy?

My MIL is in assisted living and they play bingo, drink, and take buses to the casino all the time. It’s like living in a fraternity house when you’re 85.

It sounds more like he was having issues admitting that he was sad, depressed, and lonely.

People get so used to feeling down that they think it's normal and there's no reason to go on. Advice to anyone who feels stuck..make a big change in your life. It will make a world of difference in your outlook on the world and your place in it.

People who look down suicide can't put themselves on other peoples shoes. You don't know what pain people go through each day. And the fact that a person has the conviction to go through to end one's pain by ending's one's consiousness is uneasy for certain people.

If you hear some fricked up situations people are in instead of judging them, you would begin to understand where they come from.

He had two children, both of which are adults and they are productive members of society.
So he was of zero use to them, no advice or nothing? Did his children have kids?

if I had to guess, he probably had no relationship with his kids, or else it doesn't make sense to say he's not needed any more.

Just because you say that in a note does not mean it is true.

How do you think his kids feel about it? Grandchildren?

This is a very good point. 55 seems too young if he didn't have any major health issues. Id be spending that inheritence to travel the world, you only get to see it once.

I had a good friend from high school commit suicide about 10 years ago. We'd sort of lost touch after high school but we talked every once in a while.

Last time I talked to him he was doing well. Had a wife and a little girl and 9 months later he was dead. I guess you never know what some people are going through.

Pain and struggle are temporary, death is eternal. That’s why it’s selfish.

Only way I feel this is true is if they have a medical condition and the pain of that condition is unbearable or they basically can't do anything any more. THat's no way to live life.

But otherwise, it's a mental illness essentially, and making that type of decision under that type of duress...you're obviously not thinking clearly to make that decision with any level of confidence that it is the correct thing to do. THat's not selfish, that's just kind of basic logic IMO.

If you think that it's selfish you have never felt truly suicidal, which of course is a good thing. But just so you know that is so not true and counter to the real mindset of someone that is suicidal. Either they think their continued existence is a burden to those around them, as in the world would be better off without them, or they are just so literally tortured they are looking for any way out. It may be misguided and or terribly sad, but it's not selfish.

My first thought was the Saigon thread. It's pretty hard to dispose of your own body.
