That’s a bit harsh. Come on. Won a Super Bowl, more games than any coach before, should’ve played in another. He tried on QBs - struck out.
Chase Daniel (similar college career to Brees), Garrett Grayson, Ian Book (everyone thought was a steal).
The biggest criticism for Payton should be: too many bad defenses. Comparing Brees to Brady, Big Ben, Rivers, Manning and others - always had worst defenses. 2014-2016 7-9 records.
That last year was brutal for Saints / Payton
They start 5-2, lose Jameis. Then have 2 throwaway games cause all these guys were positive for COVID. Miss playoffs by 1 game. Finish 9-8.
I think he was burnt out, and knew his team in New Orleans would always be compared to time with Brees.
