About a year ago, my wife's cousin committed suicide. Actually, we can only surmise that he did because he left a note saying as much and simply disappeared. We haven't been able to actually read the suicide note because the police kept the note as evidence.

Monday the family received a copy of the note. In the note CJ made a point of letting his family know that he was not sad or depressed, and he didn't have a terminal disease. He basically said he was done with what he needed to do on this earth and he didn't see a reason to continue.

He had two children, both of which are adults and they are productive members of society. He divorced about 5 years or so ago. He even went so far as to say that all he would do is spend his offspring's inheritance. BTW, he was 55.

I know the short answer to why suicide is considered wrong is because the Bible says it is. Outside of the biblical argument though, what makes it such a bad thing?

Bonus question; Are humans the only animal that commit suicide?

it's the ones left behind who feel the pain.

Because even if you leave a note, at least some of you relatives will always blame themselves and wonder what they could have done to stop you.

I think it's selfish. He was done with his life, but maybe his kids wanted him around to be a grandfather or someone they can look to for advice while they hit different stages. Once you're part of a family it's not about you anymore.

Bonus question: With no research at all I would think we are.

Suicide inflicts a lot of pain and trauma on the loved ones of the deceased.

It’s bad for society since these tend to be young, intelligent, productive people who die, and they otherwise would be contributing to the economy and paying taxes to support government ponzy schemes_ I mean “benefits”.

Suicidal people never see themselves as selfish, in fact, just the opposite. They view themselves as a burden, and believe that the most selfless thing they can do is remove that burden from their friends and families. It’s absolutely tragic to see so many young people take their lives unnecessarily, all in the false hope that their deaths might ease others’ suffering.

I always tie these things back to Christianity in our society. In the 5th century Augustine wrote on it, and in the 6th it became sinful.

Killing yourself is like a bomb going off.

The only thing gone is that person, and everyone around them is hurt or devasted.

In general, yes. But as the OP stated, his intentions were more noble than anyone I've heard of who committed suicide...which was to not spend the inheritance he planned to give his kids.

I'm not sure of the relationship he had with his kids or friends...maybe it was not good? But there's no way in hell I'd trade my Father's life for any sum of money.

I bet cleaning up after suicides is not a pleasant experience. I know some people clean up after disasters for a living but that can be traumatizing.

I think some penguins that fail to find a mate go off alone to die, so no. I’m sure there are others.

If you love anyone, suicide isn’t an option. You are forcing years of grief on them that they didn’t ask for. If kids you’re just an a-hole. You are given one life. Outside of terminal illness with years of suffering I can’t comprehend ending it.

I just don’t
See myself doing that. But it’s hard to judge what is going on in someone’s mind. Said person may think they just can’t go on anymore.

If a person is struggling with life so bad that the only way they see out of that suffering is death, and you want them to keep living through that pain and struggle, maybe you need to reevaluate who is the one actually being selfish?
