Can LSU afford to fire its current defensive staff and hire new ones?

LSU football makes money. I get it. But everyone has a budget.
And I think the answer to my topic question is no.
LSU still owes Ed Orgeron $6M ($750K to be paid by Dec 15) over the next two years.
Matt House has $4.1M left on his contract through 2025.
So that’s $10M by the end of 2025 needed to be paid out.
Jimmy Lindsey will make $800K in 2024. Robert Steeples and Cooks $500K in 2024. Jancek another ~$400K.
So you’re at approximately $13M over the next two years to tell your current defensive staff to go away.
Then you have to buy out your new staff from its current job (unless contract language allows for them to leave in getting a promotion).
But you’re not hiring a college position coach to come be your next DC.
You’re looking at approximately $20M (including O’s remaining pay) over the next two years to revamp your defensive staff if you choose to fire coaches.
In short, LSU has to wait to allow for its current staffers to either find new jobs (and LSU pays the difference in salaries since they were forced out), OR you hire coaches who are currently unemployed and don’t require a buyout.
Current DC candidates not on staff anywhere include Jim Leonhard and Geoff Collins come to mind off the top of my head. I’m sure there are others.

Wait, Matt house has two more years left on his deal?
I didn't realize they gave him an extension.

I think Matt House stays and they change position coaches. People will throw big tantrums over this.

true........however, some budgets have a certain $$ coming in and that wont change, whereas some budgets have influence from donors etc. so then the question becomes, does the right influential donor step up and say make it happen? i don't know, but i wish i was in a position to have that asked of me.

LSU needs to stop over paying for average coaches

Woody can find money when needed. He’s done this too many times, he also wants an ROI.
You might remember this one:
Kim Mulkey won't make more at LSU than she did at Baylor, Tigers AD says
Tim Buckley
Lafayette Daily Advertiser
New LSU coach Kim Mulkey’s has one of the richest contracts in women’s college basketball. The deal is similar to what Mulkey made at Baylor.
The LSU Board of Supervisors’ athletic committee gave its stamp of approval Thursday morning to terms of the contract, which is laden with incentive clauses. Mulkey agreed to an eight-year, $23.6 million package, according to records obtained by USA TODAY last week.
“Essentially her contract was the exact same contract that she had at Baylor," LSU athletics director Scott Woodward told committee members before contract terms were approved. "I couldn’t ask her to take less, obviously, with her incredible career and incredible record. But she understood what we had here and how badly we wanted her, and she took the exact same thing that she had at Baylor."
According to tax records obtained by USA TODAY, Mulkey made more than $3 million in 2019, including about $600,000 in bonuses. But otherwise it's not clear exactly how Mulkey's contract at Baylor lines up with her new deal at LSU.

You lost all credibility when you threw this in there to inflate the total expenditure

Yes, I am not sure who it was that published it but there was a article done right before the season about athletic depts around the country and who had the most money it could tap into that wasn't generated by the program. It was done by donations and LSU was 6th in the nation. So this notion that is always parroted by the dumb asses like Matt Mascona and Culotta is bullshite. The money is available if their is a need.

I don't know why you're including Orgeron's buyout, that is separate and already budgeted. Regardless of that, no the athletic department isn't drowning in money, but I don't think the numbers you are talking about are anything to make them balk at the decision.
I'm not going to pretend to know the inner workings of the department budget, but the new SEC TV contract with ESPN is kicking in soon which would provide substantially more money per year. I've seen projections saying each team should receive $20m more annually from the SEC than they did previously. Obviously there are other athletic projects that need to be done for other sports, but I'm sure they can throw a few million of that per year at football coaches payouts if deemed necessary. The last athletic budget reporting, which accounted for firing Orgeron, had around a $6.5m surplus with $4.5m of that going back to the university.

Either they have no language or the payout to the school is minimal.
For instance, BKs buyout to LSU is $2m a year vs his $9m salary. And that's completely canceled if Woodward is no longer the AD
And defense asst should be minimal

If I could relive my life, I’d dedicate it to being a college head coach at a Power 5 school.

Why do position coaches have guaranteed contracts?
Posted on 12/4/23 at 8:50 pm to MrWiseGuy
Wealthy alumni need to make non taxable donations somewhere.
Posted on 12/4/23 at 9:39 pm to MrWiseGuy
No. Only the federal government can do that.

Why is firing a coach so expensive? Because it’s worth it
