They exist. They are called master planned communities. I live in one....The Woodlands. I feel like The Woodlands does an okay job at maintaining, but you can definitely tell that certain areas aren't as nice as they got older, corporate bullshite has priority in certain decisions, etc.. And no way it would stand in its current form without being tied to Houston proper.

You can downvote me to Hades if you want, after we retire we are headed to NE Oklahoma.

Portugal, Slovenia, or some small town in Italy are the top 3. I was stationed in Italy back in the 80s and would love to go back. The biggest drawback to the first two is the language which is difficult to learn and I might be getting too old and lazy to want to deal with it.

There are enough British ex-pats in Portugal that would be okay as you learn the language. I'm pretty sure that's where my dad is going in the next few years, somewhere in the Algarve.

Pay attention to your kids for Gods sake and do things with them. It’s not hard
Because everyone has a stay at home mom baking cookies for the kids to come home after school?
How old are all y'all's kids?
Because this is how it goes in the country...
Schools have football, basketball, and baseball/softball. You can be in the band or cheer.
That's pretty much it. Your kid wants to do anything else, you're looking at a drive that's probably prohibitive.
You have a really smart kid interested in dual credit or AP/Honors courses? Good luck! They probably don't exist at your rural school.
They aren't spending all their time hunting and fishing. Y'all seem to have the idea that because they can hunt and fish, that's all they will be doing.
I'm just saying that I lived it as a kid and so did all the kids I knew. It's not better now. I've seen tons of folks move to the country to keep their kids out of trouble. Well, kids will find it anywhere. Rural America isn't a cure.

My wife and I really want to retire to Louisiana. We both went to HS in BR. We both graduated from LSU. We both left Louisiana after graduation and have spent our entire professional careers outside of Louisiana.
We really tried to figure out how to make the Garden District in NOLA work. We've given up on that idea.

Left the heat and the crime down south for a town in the mountains. Best decision of all time.

There is almost none of that where I am, maybe just move within the south?

Climate-wise I don’t see myself leaving the south.
But I sure see myself pulling a lot further away from a number of the big cities and even the suburbs in there.
I’m so fricking done with EBR Parish. I want a landing spot that at least has different problems instead of the same shite they are intentionally not fixing.

Not really. We live in a nice and very safe area that my family has lived for generations. Don’t feel the need to uproot and be some transplant in some other place. Just stay away from Nola and BR and you’ll be fine or as fine as you would be anywhere else.

Climate would be one of the main reasons I'd want to leave

I'd enjoy maybe Boone, NC or someplace like that in the South. I'd gladly leave behind the heat, humidity and hurricanes.

And how is this any different in big cities?

The south is just fine just gotta get out of the major metro areas.

My wife won't leave her family. If she would, I would like to move farther north to avoid some of the heat.

There are nice areas in the South just like the rest of the country although I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to leaving it either, mostly for better weather and landscape
This is mostly it for me. We live in a nice area of Lafayette, I don't know what else I'd really need that I would get from somewhere else, other than better weather and scenery.

I fricking hate the cold and don’t want to deal with ice and snow more than I have to.
I have loved the Carolinas whenever I have been through there but I don’t think I could handle going up and down steep roads with snow and ice.
Florida panhandle probably appeals most to me but hurricanes will obviously be an issue.

quote:You generalize way too much here. It just depends on where you are, local income levels, what state you are in, etc. I live in the middle of 30 acres 25 mins from the edge of a mid-sized city, 12 mins from Walmart/grocery stores, and 12 mins from the schools (where yes they do have AP classes and high graduation rates).

Lot of people on here crapping on living in a rural area. You simply don't know what you are talking about. The only drawback is driving a little further when you must go into town. A small price to pay for peace and tranquility.
