3 main areas to avoid from broad to more narrow

Urban settings like New Orleans and Baton Rouge
Blighted areas within those urban areas
Time period in that areas after 8pm until sunrise

Avoidance is the key. Avoid the above as much as possible and greatly reduce your chances of being robbed, harmed or killed

Please name a state that is contiguously south of either one of those.

Absolutely, and I did it almost 4 years ago. Was born and raised in La., lived all over the state as well as Ga, NC, & SC and will never ever move back. I am now living my dream in a cabin in the mountains of New England. I now live so remote I leave the keys in my front door and vehicles so I always know where they are. I only lock my door to stop the wind from blowing it open. But my reasoning for leaving the South was 3 fold:
1. The heat!
2. The Bible thumpers
3. The crime
In that order

Miami I can see being that way but the rest of the state is not like that.

You watched too much Miami Vice or Scarface. The drug problem in Miami was in the 70s & 80s, during that time there was so much demand for police force that in order to apply for a job, all you had to do was submit your resume. No experience or psychological tests were required to be a police officer.

Nowadays, Miami does not have that drug problem or drug dealers running around. I never said that this city is drug free, but that is not a problem anymore. Our problems are others.

We are having a problem now with city over population and an infrastructure that is not designed to withstand the amount of migration during the last few years, both foreigners and nationals. And most of the problem this has created is an absurd cost of living (housing) and taxes increasing at an alarming rate.

Nobody worries about drugs anymore in Miami. I was surprised to read here about in NOLA having to lock your doors to go and pay for gas. I'm surprised by that. Never here I have to worry about locking my car doors for anything. In fact, last weekend, I was at home looking for my car keys. I could not find them anywhere. Turns out they were inside my car with the doors unlocked. Car was still there and I had left my briefcase there as well. All was intact.

Schools have football, basketball, and baseball/softball. You can be in the band or cheer.

That's pretty much it. Your kid wants to do anything else, you're looking at a drive that's probably prohibitive

And how is this any different in big cities?

It's massively different. There's many more sports. I'll list a bunch here. Maybe you've heard of some.

Volleyball, tennis, gymnastics, swimming and diving, water polo, lacrosse, wrestling, soccer, track and field, cross country, rock climbling (yes, there are even scholarships in this). There are probably more. I know kids who have gone to college and done all these sports on scholarships.

Other activities.

Theater, voice, dance (usually there's a small dance studio, but it might be 30-45 minutes away from the small town), voice, orchestra, all kinds of art classes.

Summer jobs are pretty easy for kids to find as well.

You generalize way too much here. It just depends on where you are, local income levels, what state you are in, etc. I live in the middle of 30 acres 25 mins from the edge of a mid-sized city, 12 mins from Walmart/grocery stores, and 12 mins from the schools (where yes they do have AP classes and high graduation rates).

Lot of people on here crapping on living in a rural area. You simply don't know what you are talking about. The only drawback is driving a little further when you must go into town. A small price to pay for peace and tranquility.

So you don't really live in a rural area. You live at the edge of a mid sized city.

My entire extended family lives in towns like you describe. I grew up in one much smaller than you describe. All of them are in N. Louisiana. I assure you, these places are not nearly as nice as they were 40-50 years ago. A lot of the very small towns have gotten smaller and are almost dead. Walmart killed them.

I think some of them are average or better, but my family all sends their kids to private schools that are good, but not great. The drive is the least of the problems.

Even with their lawlessness going on it's not a real dangerous place.

A good August is when nothing happens. But this one has been more like the devil’s month, as some call it in South America. During a time that, one hoped, was going to mark some summer recovery from the social dislocations of the pandemic, Seattle is instead continuing to slide backward — dangerously so in the areas of street crime and drugs.

quote:

Crime like this can ebb and flow. But currently the city is on its deadliest pace in nearly three decades. Seattle this month has also passed 500 shootings for the year — a year that is only two-thirds done.

quote:

I fear the same is happening with drug overdoses and deaths. August has been the cruelest month on that front, too. The city’s 911 system has recorded 53 drug casualty calls just this month, more than double the average from the spring. King County tracks all overdose calls. In August, so far, paramedics have attended to 141 opioid overdoses just in downtown Seattle. That’s five overdoses per day in that one neighborhood.

Yeah Seattle is falling apart. Some of you are blind to the reality.

quote:

I mean it’s got to be more productive than buying giant planters and filling them with gravel to block the RVs from camping in front of your house — as some desperate residents have now done out in Ballard.

Lol at least I don’t have to worry about some drugged up fricks parking a camper in front of my house and just live there.

We left and live in Telluride, CO now and haven’t regretted it one bit. My first choice was Whitefish, Montana but my commute for work is a lot easier from here for who I fly for. One day we might finally make it to Whitefish after I retire but that’s a good ways off. Telluride is beautiful though I can’t complain. I’ll always be a southern man at heart though.

The south isn't the problem. It's large cities run by Democrats no matter the geographic location. Get the hell out of the big cities and you'll find things are much, much better.

Telluride is cool, guess I’d just get tired of the snow and it being so small. Although I don plan on making a trip there in 2023 to get some skiing in.
