re: Seriously, what makes the Mona Lisa such a big deal?

One of the best things post COVID lockdowns was lack of crowds at major tourist attractions. I have pics of my kids right in front of it with no crowd. I've never seen a timer but they will move you along after a bit. The pic above is an odd perspective. Half the room isnt trying to look at ML but the pic gives the impression you are stuck behind that crowd to get a glimpse. Also, ML looks much larger in that pic than it actually is from across the room.

Because at the time of painting it was groundbreaking, now it is just famous because it is famous.
Personally would not cross a street to gaze upon it.

Heard a factoid that people are allowed to view it for 15 seconds and then must move on.
Maybe that’s a suggestion or something by the museum but if you’ve seen the crowds that form around it you would see that it’s impossible to keep track of everyone’s 15 seconds

It wasn’t as famous until it got stolen about 100 years ago. It became more popular after that. Personally, I prefer Van Gogh’s Starry Night.

I'm on the side of the fence that just doesn't see what makes it a big whoop in the art world other than the fact Da Vinci painted it.
At best, she's a pleasant looking woman, but certainly no earth shaking beauty.

The Wedding Feast at Cana is directly across the room from the Mona Lisa and often gets overlooked.
An idea of how large it is:
quote:
Cana is the Louvre's largest painting, weighing more than 1.5 tons and stretching across 22 feet by 32.5 feet, which equates to 70 square meters of painted area. Nearly 130 highly personalized characters populate the scene.
Among the wedding guests are historical personages, such as the monarchs Eleanor of Austria, Francis I of France, and Mary I of England, Suleiman the Magnificent, tenth sultan of the Ottoman Empire, and the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V; the poetess Vittoria Colonna, the diplomat Marcantonio Barbaro, and the architect Daniele Barbaro; the noblewoman Giulia Gonzaga and Cardinal Pole, the last Roman Catholic Archbishop of Canterbury, the master jester Triboulet and the Ottoman statesman Sokollu Mehmet Pasa — all dressed in the sumptuous Occidental and Oriental fashions alla Turca popular in the Renaissance.

The funniest thing to me abou the Mona Lisa is that on the other side of the hall there is a massive painting, The Wedding Feast at Cana. It’s 22’ by 32”
And no one cares.
Can you imagine paining 704 square feet of canvas and getting outshined every day by a postage stamp?

Was surprised at the size too
They had it roped off and you weren’t allowed to get close when I saw it, it’s also behind like 3 feet of glass

I find most of that stuff honestly silly and completely objective.

Van Gogh is just impressive in general when you consider his technique and his life in general. Also cool to see in person when you see how thick the pigment is on the actual canvas, which creates visual “movement”.

I was there post hammer attack (on the painting, read about it) but pre ropes that keep you back.
So all the fricking idiot tourists would put their hands all over the bulletproof glass and the museum didn't clean the glass during the day. By the time I got to see the painting, you could barely see it for the crap all over the glass. I was pissed.
For those that mention the painting across from it, I was blown away. I turned from the ML all pissed off and was like "what the hell is that?" Spent a good while just staring at the dinner.

I wasn't impressed when I saw it. But I also never liked Fleur de Lis pizza
