It's a fine painting, especially since the brushstrokes are so subtle.

But, seeing it in person is extremely underwhelming. It's so small and you can't get near it (especially with the crowd it always seems to have.) Pretty much every photo you have seen on the internet of it is more clear than seeing it in person.

Now, the Venus De Milo? That will take your breath away when you see it in person.

If you are lucky to even get that close.

It became really famous after it was stolen and smuggled to Italy.

There is an excellent little documentary on the theft.

Edit to add that audio starts at 3:00 minute mark.

Is it just because Da Vinci painted it? Is there anything else special about it?

1. LDV painted it.

2. It was stolen.

3. While it’s not the most impressive painting in the world, the woman with an enigmatic smile gives it a little mystery and uniqueness.

the combination of the good techniques already describes plus the history of the piece itself created a perfect mystique around it to give it the status it is today.

i mean really, pretty much most things considered of greatness or value are partly only so because of some arbitrary designation man assigned to it. once a few people start claiming something is great it doesnt take long to snowball.

To this day I regret wasting a day in Paris at the Lourve looking for that postage stamp of a painting.

This. I thought there were a lot of better artworks scattered around the louvre. Here is a video I took from 2019 just to show you the crowds there. LINK
