It seems to be all about why she is smiling.

I think it’s pretty interesting how her frown changed to a smirk after all these years

It wasn’t as famous until it got stolen about 100 years ago. It became more popular after that. Personally, I prefer Van Gogh’s Starry Night.

The Mona Lisa is kind of like the Empire State Building. The ESB hasn’t been the tallest building in the world for 50 years and there are many skyscrapers no one has heard of that are taller, even much taller. I would also argue that the Rockefeller Center has a better observation deck.

But… it’s the Empire State Building. It’s iconic, historic. It’s arguably the most famous building in the world. At a certain point some objects/structures just have inherent value that never goes away.

The Mona Lisa was stolen years ago. When it was taken it was not a well known piece of art besides the fact it was a Leonardo painting. The newspaper media went crazy posting articles about the missing Leonardo painting. It was eventually found. I think a worker in the museum had it in his apartment. After it was found it made headlines world wide. The Mona Lisa then went on a fan tour and went to several countries showing off the recovered art. And thus the Mona Lisa became famous.
