It seems likely given he was making ~$200k and the market for his services appeared to be soft (this is the first time I've heard his named mentioned for an open D-1 position in a few years).

He wasn’t looking for a job because he was getting $600 thousand per year from Nebraska and raising his kids in his hometown.

The money has ended, the kids are basically raised and he’s put his name out there.

It’s not that hard to figure out.

He’s being paid $500,000 less than Aranda was and Steele currently is.

I wouldn’t call this an overpay under any scenario.

Many coaches that have won NC in the past 2 decades are not coaching or couldn't buy a job because they were one hit wonders or happened to have that perfect player in order to do it.

From 2010-2019 the only coaches to win a title who is no longer coaching is Urban Meyer and Chizik

From 2000-2009 you have: Stoops, Coker, Tressel, Saban, Caroll, Brown, Urban, Miles. The only one here you can say flamed out is Cooker and the entire UM program went to shite as well.

Out of all of those names only two jump out Chizik and Coker. So to answer your question there are two coaches in the past decade who you could say were one-hit wonders.

LSU athletics pays coaches to help produce championships. These championships bring 10s of millions of dollars and rise in enrollment. The university benefits.

In 2005, Pelini was hired by LSU Tigers Head Coach Les Miles, again as defensive coordinator. His success continued, as LSU was ranked 3rd nationally in overall defense for each of his three years with the Tigers.

You do know that other than Aranda and now Pelini, LSU coaching salaries are average to below average.

I get what you’re saying to a point but you had to pay O after 2019, we still don’t know what the buyout is so no need to overreact to that. And while I have some reservations about Bo, we could do a LOT worse, Kevin Steele is making 2.5 now, how can we justify going on the cheap?

So...LSU is either piching pennies or making it rain. Just can't make the Rantards happy.

You are totally wrong in my opinion. They paid him accordingly for what they want in a DC. You pay for what you get. He’s better than Aranda.

So we have an AD spending money to pay the head coach market value after the best season in cfb history and to bring in one of the best defensive coordinators around after losing one of the same and we’ve got people bitching?

There’s no pleasing some of y’all

I haven’t seen it mentioned so I apologize if I’m repeating something already said but have you considered that paying good money for coaches also helps in recruiting future coaches? A schools reputation in this regard goes a long way in generating interest during searches. If guys know a school will pay aggressively you’re gonna see a ton of interest from good candidates

but we're now basically in the exact position of A&M contract wise.

How do you figure?

I read Bo’s deal is 3 years

O’s is 6

Jimbo’s is 10

Idk Elko’s admittedly, but Bo and O aren’t even in the same stratosphere bad a guaranteed 75M deal over a decade

This is some Alleva level bullshite.

You reward the underpaid HC after guiding the team to arguably the greatest season in CFB history. He produced.

This. LSU made a fortune this season. I’d rather them reinvest that in the football program-pay the best football coaches and upgrade football facilities than waste it on non revenue sports.

Hopefully we’re also pouring money into recruiting budget and building up the shadow staff. Those are the areas aLLabama and UGA have been moneywhipping the conference in.

Don't be naive. You continue to underpay a guy and he reels off a couple 10-win seasons with a NY6 bowl or two and the overtures will start. And he would definitely be interested had the university fricked him out of cash on the tail end of the single greatest season in the university's history.

The athletic department has all the money in the world

I’m honestly disappointed he didn’t throw $3M+ at Brady.

Like T-Bob was saying the other day, these salaries don’t really affect anything. The pocket books are open, and boosters will pony up whatever LSU needs to cover their coaching staff.

Yep all it takes is a Natty and the checkbooks stay open. Proved it works keep rolling out the cash, unless it starts to fail. Keep winning keep spending pretty simple concept. Everyone is happy to donate and dish out money when you are winning ships

Ridiculous. LSU just went what...15-0? Won a National Championship. The revenue the program is seeing from that is likely 5 times whatever the cumulative value of O’s new contract. You pay men who earned it and whatever you think about O, he earned his contract.

You don’t go cheap on coaches who produce. Especially not after this season. LSU has a rising tide between donations and new TV deal. All ships rise and it makes it even more palatable to do when you have a case full of hardware.
