I'm not saying O didn't deserve a raise and Pelini should have been cheap but we're now basically in the exact position of A&M contract wise.

But we aren’t...

Their contract is bigger, longer, there is no offset. O makes less even after incentives than Jimbo’s base salary, and likely had an offset if we fire him, which Jimbo doesn’t have.

LSU is locked in and have no wiggle room should things go south.

By the time it’s clear we need to move on from O (if that happens) well have the wiggle room. The dudes not going anywhere in the next 3-4 years.

Also you haven’t seen what pelini’s contract looks like so you don’t know what his buyout would be.

Except Chizik went 8-5 8-5 and 3-9 without Cam

O at least went 6-2 as an Interim and 9-4 his first year without Burrow.

I'd rather overpay and be disappointed than underpay and be disappointed. At least you're trying when you're overpaying.

Why do fans care what assistants get paid?? It literally means nothing to fans. There is no asst coach salary cap. Why is everyone so obsessed with asst pay???

it's not like any of us are paying for it, Woody is a stud fundraiser and the wealthy boosters will handle it

I want an AD who can raise the needed $ to be aggressive. This isn't State

Not saying this isn't an overpay, but there's a larger dynamic at work here in regards to maintaining a rep as a place where key staff members get paid.

LSU doesn't benefit over the long term if they get the rep of low-balling new coaches and then adjusting in a reactionary manner. Yes, this was done with Ed, but it's in the program's interest moving forward (for as long as it continues to be viewed as a top 5 program) to pay top staff top salaries. If Bo fails, then the next DC can expect to be well compensated as well.

the program didnt "make" 200 million last year... they dont have that in an account... they got $200 million worth of advertising, waaaay different than having spendable cash on hand... lets not mistake the two...

Could LSU have hired Pelini at less than $2 million per year? It seems likely given he was making ~$200k and the market for his services appeared to be soft (this is the first time I've heard his named mentioned for an open D-1 position in a few years). However, none of us were a part of the negotiations. Thus, we can't say for sure he would have accepted the position for less than $2 million.

The bigger question for the new contracts is not the yearly salary, but the years guaranteed and at what amount? That's what makes making a change cost prohibitive.

That said, it is possible LSU is negotiating deals for O and Pelini with the expectation SEC coaching salaries are going to increase substantially with the influx of new TV money coming down the pike. That is, they may be locking in O and Pelini at a "low rate" relative to what they anticipate coaches may be getting paid in a few years. Meaning, while O may be locking in his salary for several years today, LSU may be locking in a significant buyout for the coaches that could make it tougher for them to renegotiate a deal later on when the new money hits and salaries around the SEC rise. A coach's leverage is always the threat of leaving for another job. But, another school might be reluctant to hire said coach if they would have to pay a cost-prohibitive buyout to do so.

Or to put it in simpler terms, LSU may be saying to O "Here's your big score after your big season. But don't try to come leverage us later on for another raise when other HC's in the league inevitably get paid more with the new TV money."

I love CEO as much as the next guy, appreciate what he did and accomplished and hope for many more years of him and more successes!
However, someone mentioned paying for accomplishments. We were and we had a contract. Many coaches that have won NC in the past 2 decades are not coaching or couldn't buy a job because they were one hit wonders or happened to have that perfect player in order to do it.

I am all about paying someone who can repeat or replicate accomplishments with the many variables that is college football.

We did just happen to have the best college QB ever, receiving duo ever, passing coordinator / DC, you get the point.

1) CEO isn't going anywhere, this is his dream job.
2) Other coaches couldn't use the "He won't be there in a few years."
3) Other coaches couldn't use the "He has never won a NC" as negative recruiting.
4) Nobody else was going to hire him away from us.

All I am saying is we should have held out to see how things play out until the end of his original contract.

I'd be for making him the highest paid coach in the league if he could repeat.

As a defense contractor, I'd expect you to make that kind of deal and lose out on the coach because you were unwilling to commit to greatness.

You stick to overpaying on Federal jobs and let the men who work with athletic profits and coaches make the contracts.

Who cares what they are paid.

Didn't we have over $50 million in profit this year?

If so, we could write a check for O's complete contract right now and have enough to pay Pelini 4 full years.
