NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero has reported that Garrett Nussmeier underwent tests at the NFL combine that revealed a cyst on his spine, which was pressing on a nerve, causing discomfort in Nussmeier’s oblique last season.
quote:

Former LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier underwent tests at the NFL combine that revealed a cyst on his spine — the root cause of the persistent oblique pain that derailed his 2025 season, sources say.

The cyst was pressing on a nerve, causing discomfort in Nussmeier’s oblique. He has been asymptomatic since just prior to the Senior Bowl and all throughout the draft process; if that changes down the road, Nussmeier could undergo a minimally invasive procedure and miss just 2-3 weeks while stitches heal.

Either way, doctors say, there is no short- or long-term risk for Nussmeier, who is projected a mid-round pick in this week’s NFL Draft.

The medical staff missing this ruined our season last year. This could have been handled in the prior offseason

And there are also a couple of idiots out there who didn't suggest he get a "second opinion" which most people would have done

I have a friend who had a cyst on his spine. He couldn't pickup 10 lbs from the pain. The LSU Medical Staff needs to be evaluated and someone fired for not catching this.

Kelly should've been fired

BK should’ve diagnosed this!

He was too busy pretending to be John Travolta with his 360 camera.

Silence from all the "fans" casually alleging he was faking an injury all season?

Nice job identifying this LSU medial staff.

I'd rate them lower than medial in this case.

So a surgery to remove this last summer could’ve had him back to 100 percent after two week? What a miss by the medical staff.

If recovery is so minimal, why not just remove it right now? He would be fine by first minicamp.

Exactly what I was thinking. Just nip the whole thing in the bud now if it's so minimally invasive and recovery is quick.

Lots of Rant posters probably need to apologize for all their posts claiming he wasn't really injured.

Okay what the hell is wrong with medical staff? Brooks and now this?

If the cyst gets caught prior to last season and dealt with, we potentially dont get Lane Kiffin. Thank you Medical Staff for being shite at your job.

Another example why you should always get a second opinion

Did the LSU medical staff not order an MRI with contrast? Wtf man.

Now that this has been found and will likely be taken care of, I hope he has a great NFL career ahead. He was a faithful Tiger.

A journalist needs to ask Lane about this during the next press conference.

Did our medical staff test for this? Do we have the same medical staff? Do we need to make changes?

Good. We can now put this to rest.

I think if I were Nuss's parents I would have taken him to my own private doctor for a second opinion of what was going on.

His father has been around professional medical staffs since before Garrett was born. Players routinely seek second opinions outside of the team doctors, especially when there are questions surrounding the original diagnosis. I’m shocked the Nussmeier family didn’t seek outside medical evaluation.

Then why did he try to play or was forced to play? I'm no Dr. and could see he shouldn't have been playing and more tests should have been ordered. Couldn't throw the ball long, couldn't run, couldn't get hit (yet we run the read option).

Many reasons to this, including Kelly and staff utterly failing to get him a serviceable back-up. Add that to the fact that Nuss was paid multiple millions of dollars, and here we are.

I 100% agree with you on the play calls needing a QB to keep and run on occasion, that show just how bad Sloan was at his job. Even without the injury, that offensive strategy is questionable.

Better days are ahead, without that total failure, we may still have Kelly and company destroying the program from within.

Wow. Are they saying that LSU medical staff missed this?? If so, how in tf does that happen.

At some point you need to remove the purple glasses and admit that he’s a below average college QB, with no athletic ability, which doesn’t translate to the NFL. His excuses are embarrassing.

The specialist, responsible for error/overlooking, should be brought to court!!!!
