NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero has reported that Garrett Nussmeier underwent tests at the NFL combine that revealed a cyst on his spine, which was pressing on a nerve, causing discomfort in Nussmeier’s oblique last season.
quote:

Former LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier underwent tests at the NFL combine that revealed a cyst on his spine — the root cause of the persistent oblique pain that derailed his 2025 season, sources say.

The cyst was pressing on a nerve, causing discomfort in Nussmeier’s oblique. He has been asymptomatic since just prior to the Senior Bowl and all throughout the draft process; if that changes down the road, Nussmeier could undergo a minimally invasive procedure and miss just 2-3 weeks while stitches heal.

Either way, doctors say, there is no short- or long-term risk for Nussmeier, who is projected a mid-round pick in this week’s NFL Draft.

Not a ringing endorsement for LSU doctors.

I would have it removed now. Just putting his plate in the dishwasher could bring turrible pain, or long-term effects. Handle it.

Even if he was 100% last season Sloan and Kelly would’ve fricked it all up anyway. Sloan is sooo incompetent.

The medical staff needs to be evaluated. Is this the same staff when Brooks was diagnosed?

Wow that is truly a medical miracle that his symptoms resolved right before he had to improve his draft status at the senior bowl.

Damn. No wonder he felt like shite. My neighbor had this about 30 years ago and he couldn’t even tie his shoes. He hurt 24 hours a day. I’m sure treatments are better now but his surgery was very risky. Avoid that if you can and here’s to better days.

Now that this has been found and will likely be taken care of, I hope he has a great NFL career ahead. He was a faithful Tiger.

Wish the kid all the best and hope he gets past this. Time to move on though.

Then why did he try to play or was forced to play? I'm no Dr. and could see he shouldn't have been playing and more tests should have been ordered. Couldn't throw the ball long, couldn't run, couldn't get hit (yet we run the read option).

Many reasons to this, including Kelly and staff utterly failing to get him a serviceable back-up. Add that to the fact that Nuss was paid multiple millions of dollars, and here we are.

I 100% agree with you on the play calls needing a QB to keep and run on occasion, that show just how bad Sloan was at his job. Even without the injury, that offensive strategy is questionable.

Better days are ahead, without that total failure, we may still have Kelly and company destroying the program from within.

Before everyone labels, the medical staff incompetent, has anyone thought that maybe the cyst wasn’t there earlier in the season or large enough to note upon examination during the season?
If the staff made mistakes it’ll show on the scans and they’ll be held accountable but don’t blame the MD’S for multiple questionable passes.

Lawsuit for costing beaucoup dollars in contract due to draft stock drop.....that's a big time miss on the medical staff.

I am still skeptical….

I have a hard time believing that it was as simple as an MRI and nobody ordered that. Why is this completely asymptomatic now?

Yeah right. You wanna know what his injury was last season? He was butthurt for 95% of it.

If the cyst gets caught prior to last season and dealt with, we potentially dont get Lane Kiffin. Thank you Medical Staff for being shite at your job.

The cyst that saved LSU football causing the Kelly departure.

I think if I were Nuss's parents I would have taken him to my own private doctor for a second opinion of what was going on.

His father has been around professional medical staffs since before Garrett was born. Players routinely seek second opinions outside of the team doctors, especially when there are questions surrounding the original diagnosis. I’m shocked the Nussmeier family didn’t seek outside medical evaluation.

Did the LSU medical staff not order an MRI with contrast? Wtf man.
