I have been considering making the Maldives the "wow" trip next year. I am just worried it would get boring or it would be similar to the Caribbean and not worth the travel time. How was your overall trip experience and what all did you do/see?

1a) Alaska - I've been 4 times now and feel like i've only experienced 1% of what it has to offer.
1b) Backpacking in the rockies - Fishing for trout in high alpine lakes really can't be topped in my book. Alpine meadows are also my favorite landscape. Each one is uniquely different and I love how you really don't know what you're going to see when you look down into the next valley from the top of a saddle. The Wind Rivers are exceptional in this department.

Zimbabwe/Botswana and South Africa
Hands down.
Where we stayed in the Zimbabwean bush , they raised lions in captivity from babies and the lions would roar at sunrise and we took the coldest freaking showers on earth . Riding elephants around the game reserve and paying extra to watch 3 year old lions hunt in the pitch black of midnight.
To see the stars and the night sky there with zero light pollution was really magical. I think of it all these years later. It’s like I was in a planetarium or something.
Everything about it was amazing

As far as a single place that left the biggest impression, Yosemite and the valley and hiking that area. The sheer majesty, size and beauty of the valley itself is beyond description.

I went home to Amarillo, Taos, Chama, Pagosa, Durango, Ouray Moab, Arches,Canyonland, Capitol reef, Escalante, Bryce, Zion, LV, San Luis Opisbo, Hwy 1 San Fran, Hwy 1 Ave of Giants, Eureka Cali Hwy 36, 299, Whiskeytown Goose Lake, Oregon desert, Snake River Oxbo, Enterprise Joseph, Hwy 12, Lolo pass, Yellowstone NP, Beartooth pass, Wyoming, Denver, THE COLORADO Rockies, Raton pass , Texas, back home.
It was a great trip. Went back the next year and met an old HS buddy in Crestview Ca, and went to Sequoia Kings Canyon, Yosemite, Carmel, San Fran, Laguna Seca raceway for the Moto GP, Hwy 1, then a Marathon back home. Left from his house in Tucson back to Bienville parish straight through. 1350 miles in 20 hours straight. I pretty much gave up my bike after that. lol.

Italy for our 30th anniversary in 2018. Just the two of us on our own, no tour. Rome for 3 nights, Florence for 2, Cinque Terre for 2, Venice for 2, and Assisi for 2 nights. All via train. So much history, art, and great food! Ate a lot but still lost weight from all the walking. Sunday church at St. Peter's and St Francis Basilica in Assisi (saw his corpse and St Clare's on the other side of town). We've since done Paris, Bavaria, Ireland, and are planning for Spain next summer, but have our "Italy next time" list that keeps growing because we didn't get to so many other places there...hopefully our 40th.

Man, I think we were on a lot of the same roads.
lol on the Iron Butt, those things are miserable. I have done it twice and wanted to do one of the Iron Butt Rallys, but back pain/sciatica came for me too early. I mostly don't ride these days because of it.
