Your “wow” vacation

What was your most “wow” place you have been that blew you away? It does not necessarily have to be your favorite destination or even a place you would go back to due to cost, distance, etc.
I try to balance beloved destinations that I will never get tired of (Florence, New York, Kyoto/Osaka, Slovenia, etc) and then throw in an occasional “wow” once every 5 years or so.
I think mine would be Phong Nha, Vietnam. Such a cool area and the cave hikes were incredible. That being said, I feel like we saw and did everything during the time we were there and I would probably explore another region if we make it to Vietnam again.

Switzerland in general blew us away. Specifically Geneva.
Many places to have lunch/dinner on the lake. We did a boat/wine tour on lake Geneva and hit a lot of the shops just kicking tires.

The big National Parks like Yosemite, Zion, Sequoia, Yellowstone, etc. can change your perspective on life. Those places just make me feel appreciative of the gift of my life, where I live, the freedoms and blessings we have. It also makes me feel really small in the grand scheme of our world.
I visited those 20 years ago on my motorcycle and camped in a tent every night. 13 days and 6500 miles. By myself. It was life changing.
This last year my wife and I flew to Vegas and rented an SUV and spent 2 weeks in California and then southern Utah. And camped in a tent 2 nights just to experience 20 years ago. Stayed in the Redwoods at Burlington campground and at a campground outside Bryce Canyon NP. It was just as impactful this time around.
I visited those 20 years ago on my motorcycle and camped in a tent every night. 13 days and 6500 miles. By myself. It was life changing.

Wife and I went to Amalfi coast in 2023. We stayed in the town of Amalfi, took ferry to Capri, hiked the Path of the Gods. Definitely a wow vacation. One of those places that didn't feel real.

Japan for sure. Really looking forward to going back and seeing more of what I wasn't able to fit into my first trip there.

Banff blew me away. The immense size of the Canadian Rockies is unreal.

Going inside any of the large cathedrals in Europe is up there.
My first time in London was on a highschool trip. I didn’t go in Westminster or St. Paul’s because “there were better things to see than old churches.” Some of my friends told me I was missing out.
Went in both cathedrals 15 years later and they were right.

Any of the national parks. Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier, Acadia, Rocky Mountain, Grand Canyon, etc. The Utah ones of Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Zion are my favorites. Makes you appreciate the beauty and little things that this country has to offer.
My sister a year ago went to Banff and it was the most beautiful place I've ever seen. Can't wait to go there at some point.

Alaska. The sheer beauty of the place is amazing, especially being from South Louisiana where it’s so flat.

I've thought about this for a couple of hours. Plenty of places resonate and I want to bring my kids to, visit again, etc.
As a part of my traipsing around Northern Europe during one project, I went to various battlefields in Verdun, Ypres, etc. The US cemeteries in Europe in Italy, France, Belgium were all beautiful. I'm not sure this qualifies as a "vacation:"
But going to Jack's Wood outside of Bastogne in December, with a light snow falling, was next level pride, sorrow, and all kinds of feelings.

Best wow vacation?

I watched the tragic fire at Noter Dame right from the beginning.

For an outdoor vacation, Grand Canyon is pretty hard to beat. Everywhere you look is truly breathtaking.
For urban/city vacation, I really, really, really loved Seville.

Antarctica expedition. Having a small boat with fewer than 200 passengers is important so that everybody can make landings which are restricted to smaller vessels.
Falklands - South Georgia - Antarctica.
I'd recommend doing a trip that includes all 3. And I'll throw in a recommendation for Oceanwide Expeditions. They do a great job.
Kenya/Tanzania is a close #2.

I did a very similar trip and I would agree that's probably going to remain my favorite. Hit up the Great Sands, Black Canyon, Mesa Verde, Utah Mighty 5, Grand Canyon, Sequoia/Kings/Yosemite, Redwoods, Crater Lake, Craters of the Moon, Yellowstone, Devils Tower, Rushmore, Badlands, and the Arch. It was so awesome living off the bike for almost a month.
I did a shorter version of the trip in an RV with the wife and kid last year, it was fun to see her experience the places, but it just was a bit off experiencing all that on the motorcycle. It just felt different basically being outside in the elements for that long. Like you said life changing.
