re: Anyone ever used Spirit Airlines?
RT from New Orleans to Ft. Lauderdale for 75.00.

I brought a medium sized back pack that fit under the seat in front of me. I was staying at a friends house so I didn't bring many personal items. Took two changes of clothes and brought on my own water. Also print your boarding pass at home. I would do it again.

One odd thing about Spirit is that they charge you more if you do anything at the airport (boarding pass, check bag, etc) rather than online, but the ticket is cheaper if you buy it at the airport counter vs buying online. Makes no sense

Spirit is an ultra low fare carrier. Read that carefully and let it sink in.

re: Anyone ever used Spirit Airlines?
Main thing to think about on ultra low cost is that many times flights to places are once and day and not every day of the week. And if flights are below a certain occupancy level its cancelled. Point being you need to flexible to fly them. If tight schedule or lots of family it's just not worth it. Southwest, united etc have multiple flights daily. If there's an issue they can put you on a different flight or route you through a different city. Not so on spirit frontier etc. Flight cancelled you wait till next availability which could be a few days or you find a different way home. Had this happen to a buddy. I flew them out to Vegas round trip for 135 bucks. I brought a seat cushion since the seats are metal and I read a book since there is no WiFi. It was fine. Plane left late and apparently that's pretty normal.

They have a $18 flight from Tupelo, MS to Nashville, TN. I have a buddy who does that flight at least 6 times a year. He says it's solid. Probably gonna go that route soon.

I believe the airline is named for what they remove from each of their passengers.

It is great for a short flight by yourself with just a backpack. You cannot beat $25 one way from MSY to IAH for a day trip. I find the seats to get really unbearable (and I’m just an average size guy) if my flight is more than an hour or so. I did 2.5 hr flight and wanted to jump out I got so uncomfortable...or pay for the big front seat, which is like a first class seat but without a separate cabin or service.

Also, know about and be smart about their fees when booking. Ex: pay for bags before getting to the airport, print your boarding pass at home or use your phone, etc. all that costs more at the airport.

3 of us flew round trip from New Orleans to Cleveland last Easter for $198!!Everything went as planned so we had a good flight experience, saw a Cavs playoff game, a Indians game and the Roll n Roll Museum in a long weekend before we went to Akron for a family event. Was even upgraded to suite at the Hilton...Cleveland was nicer than I thought it would be.

I had zero issues on a short flight from ATL to Tampa. Bring a backpack or a small spinner. And don't order any food or drink. Problem solved.

Yeah the people bitching about the nickel and diming are hilarious. That's their business model -- it's why their tickets are so much cheaper. If you fly spirit, just don't buy the extras and travel light.

I think you're speaking of Contour Airlines.

re: Anyone ever used Spirit Airlines?
I get the dirt cheap airlines confused, particularly Spririt and Allegiant. I've flown both without any problem because I set low expectatios.

Most recently we flew to RDU on flights with $100 base. Even after adding $40 for a round trip checked bag and $72 for reserved bigger seats, we still only paid $312 total. All other flights were more expensive and most required a connection, and I still would have had to pay to check a bag.

But that was nonstop. Do check the baggage rules because some charge baggage fees per leg, so if you have to make a connection you need to pay the baggage fee 4x (2 legs each way).

re: Anyone ever used Spirit Airlines?
This topic has come up a number of times this year already.

I've flown Spirit a number of times, though I only use it for short hops (i.e. ORD -> MSP) and on my own dime.

I'm not one to complain much when it comes to flying and I don't on Spirit, either. The popular saying is true: "You get what you pay for." In addition to the base fare, passengers will pay for seats, carry-on, and checked luggage. The seats aren't rocks, but they aren't comfortable. Legroom is shortest among U.S. airlines.

There are times when flying Spirit is economical. Other times, you're better off taking another airline. Is what it is.

I guess im in the minority here, but my experience was great, flew the family (3) to Orlando for Disney, with bags it was like 600 bucks direct flight, round trip. The only holdup was the Security check in orlando. That was a shite show and almost caused us to miss our flight home after getting there 2 hours early.

You don’t have to pay the passenger usage fee when purchasing tickets at the airline. It’s something like $20/ticket each way. It can definitely be worth a trip to the airport if you’re buying tickets for a large group.

re: Anyone ever used Spirit Airlines?
I flew Spirit on a short flight from New Orleans to Houston to connect with another flight on another airline from Houston to Mexico City. The layover was long enough that I wasn't really concerned about time.

Only thing I really remember is that the seating seemed a little more cramped than other airlines. But it got me from Point A to Point B on time and without incident, so I have no complaints.
