I thought if anyone was going to come on for Gordon it was going to be Rashford to try and catch Argentina on a breakaway and try to press a little bit late.
Taking off Gordon meant you lost your only speed on the outside.

Lamine vs Messi, passing of the torch. Messi secures the golden boot today. Legend.
Argentina won fair and square today though. Unreal performance by Messi vs an epic choke job by England.

Rashford came on, just didn't have enough time or space to do anything.

As someone who has seen both of them play in person several times, Messi is better. Pele outclassed players of his time, but Messi is another level.
Do you think Pelé getting the same training and fitness advancements Messi has had would not have been any better than he was at the time?
Messi is an entirely one dimensional player. He’s an offensive juggernaut who plays absolutely no defense whatsoever. Many of the other great scorers were similar. I rank players on overall game personally and someone like Zidane could play basically anywhere non the field for example. I am not saying his the GOAT, but he. Was a true great player at all three levels.
Messi is absurdly good at one.
Think of why Jordan was considered and is the greatest? He’s almost as good defensively basically as he was offensively. He’s not a one sided player.
Again, Messi is top 3 and GOAT worthy, but I don’t consider him a definitive GOAT simply on host stats.
Further, as mentioned, pro soccer leagues are ridiculously top heavy and have no type of balance. It’s easy to go to a top team where you have 30-40% of the top talent in a league and excel.
International stage he’s been dominant, sure, but Mbappé is right there with him with 2 WC finals in his first 3 WCs. This is Messi’s 3rd in his long career. That doesn’t make Mbappé better, but shows how the game has become since the turn of the century.

Bruh come on. Pele was an incredible player and scorer. He was not as good a playmaker as Messi

Pele spent the majority of his career with Santos. A weaker
league than La Liga and League
One. His last World Cup was when he was 30. Messi is still
playing and winning World Cup games at 39 years old.
Would better training techniques have helped Pele ?
of course. It doesn’t matter though.

Unfortunately I missed this entire thread bc I was at Finn’s
But all I’ll say is that was incredible and amazing.
I wanted England to win and they were the better team through 70 minutes.
All the England fans were inside and the Argentina fans were outside.
Goddam it was electric once they scored the first and the second…

What’s really amazes me is that Tuchel had about 5 warning signs that the Arg goal was coming lol

The messi glazing after this game was laughable. His first assist was nothing and the second was a good ball but only because he fouled his defender immediately prior. He's great obviously but to suck his wiener every match is embarrassing

Probably just trying to make sure he gets suspended for the third place game

There is no other clear cut GOAT in all of sports as far as pure dominance on another level than everyone else. Closest comparison is Gretzky in hockey (though a distant second).

Gretzky is ahead of Messi in terms of clear cut number 1 in their sports. Both are the respective GOATs, but Gretzky’s stats are insane compared to everyone else. He still has more assists than any other hockey player has points.

This is so true. WTF was Tuchel thinking by parking the bus after going only 1-0 up on the greatest attacking team in the world? Never rated him at Chelsea, and although he has done an admittedly good job getting ENG to the semifinals in the WC, he done F'D this one up in a major league fashion.

Messi is the best to ever do it. No further comment.
