Elite athletes don’t matter, look at Messi. He looks like an 8th grade history teacher

And many can’t walk and chew gum at the same time but still get participation trophies. And then middle school arrives, and the real athletes abandon soccer and devote themselves to American sports.

All athletes need to start with soccer as Harbaugh advocated.

How many World Cup matches have you watched? How many of the best players on earth are somewhere between 5’7-5’11 and 145-170 lbs.

The answer is most of them. We don’t need the LeBrons of the world playing soccer and he’d probably suck at it outside of being developed as a keeper.

We need development for the masses of normal sized kids out there in a country as big as ours.

Seems like the team is young and talented. Not multiple top 100 players talented but enough to be respected. Today’s result hopefully fuels them in the future.

and the real athletes

again, the best to ever play this sport wouldn’t raise eyebrows on the street in every major city in America. no, LeBron would never be good at this. no matter what you did

Our population provides us with the largest talent pool of the top 20 ranked teams in the world. The only 2 countries with larger population to pool from are China (#91) and India (139).

The problem is that we don't know how to use that talent pool effectively.

The elite of the elite athletes are always going to gravitate to football and basketball... depending on their physical makeup.

But those athletes aren't the right type of build for a top tier soccer player.

Quit focusing on those select few and look for the athletes that are just as athletic as the NFL and NBA talent, but don't have the physical makeup required.

Look for the athletic kids that have all the same abilities, but are too short and too small to play those sports at the highest level and turn them to soccer.

Athletics wise, Manziel could have been a great midfielder. Speed and vision and quickness which is different from speed.

We could find a small forward body or big wr and if they were trained at a young age train them to be Haaland type that just bullies people around.

That’s a more likely scenario for us than finding a Messi out of 5’7 short kings

The problem is even if the better athletes play soccer young there’s no where for them to go to make it to that elite level here in the states. It’s hard to sell an inner city black kid on moving to Europe at 14 when they can play high school here then make money at a college close to home before chasing a huge check in a professional league also in a desirable city with their same culture.

We need to somehow kill title 9 and have SEC and big 10 big time college soccer where they can develop then maybe at 20-22 ship off to Europe

The existence of diminutive great players doesn’t disprove the notion that if soccer were on par with American football or baseball or even basketball and many of those skills players (not the 7 foot tall giants or offensive linemen) grew up playing soccer we would have a far more competitive squad.

But that would obviously require a major transformation in American culture and American soccer talent development that may never happen.

But height (within reason) and speed and strength are just as useful in the game of soccer as they are in other sports.

Height is great for goal keepers, winning headers, etc. Speed is obvious. Let’s throw in jumping ability as well. Strong players can bully others off the ball.

It’s common sense. Short kings and rabid futbol enthusiasts just get defensive about their sport and offended that they would be replaced if more athletic specimen grew up playing as well. But it would be no different than a Jackie Robinson-type moment. Not all of them, but many of them.

Look at Erling Haaland. He would be playing tight end in the NFL if he were born in America.
