re: NCAA committee considering 7-figure fines, head coach suspensions for transfer violations

Look up any of the 100 lawsuits over the last couple years. Federal court ones will be the most relevant. House Settlement is obviously the big one - held that the NCAA restricting NIL / payment violated federal anti-trust law.

What laws have been broken?
Antitrust Law (Shearman Act)
Many employment / labor laws
Most lawsuits today involve the violations of the Shearman Act.

Ole Miss doesn't have to be a part of the NCAA. But it's in their best interest to be a part of it.
There's no alternative, it's essentially a monopoly. Which federal courts have already ruled it is (which opened the door to all these lawsuits).

With that membership comes responsibilities and guidelines to be followed.
Not if those rules violate the law - which they do.

The rules are known. If they break the rules, they are already aware of the consequences.
If you move into a neighborhood with a HOA, you know you have to follow their rules. You even get to vote on board members to make rules. But guess what, even with that, HOA can't pass and enforce rules that violate the law. You knew the rules when you moved in, but if the rules are illegal they still are not enforceable.

They could go to a school outside of the NCAA, like JUCO or NAIA.
No where near the same. Both in terms of current earning potential but also future earnings.

Same with the Schools. They don't have to be a member of the NCAA, but as long as they are they should be held accountable for following the rules and regulations and the rulings of the NCAA.
The NCAA is essentially a monopoly. There isn't another option for the kids or schools.
None of this gives a free pass for the NCAA to enforce illegal rules which the schools have very little say in. And the players have absolutely no say in.
Want to be able to enforce illegal rules - collective bargain or get anti-trust protection from Congress. Until either of those happen, the NCAA has no legal ability to enforce rules which violate a wide variety of laws (both federally and state).

The problem that some of y'all seem to have is that y'all think that there is an inherent right to employment.
There is not right to employment. But there also isn't a right for an employer to force an employee to stay and not accept another job elsewhere.
A school doesn't have to give a spot to any specific player. But they also can't legally force someone to stay and not accept employment elsewhere.

That rule was done away with due to legal pressure / challenges. So your would be correct, it is no different.

How is this any different?
Those have all been agreed to with collective bargaining. This hasn't. This is akin to an employer saying you have 2 weeks out of the year to change jobs.

Well currently the NCAA has a rule against spring transfers (so penalizes player). Plus will argue that harsh penalties against school for taking a spring player illegally suffocates the free market and hurts the players value.

This isn’t going to help matters and I bet it results in the courts imposing rules changes on the NCAA again.
Yeah a kid is 100% going to transfer in the spring. This rule will be challenged, and a court will deem it's illegal (which it is). NCAA just made up a rule knowing they'll lose again in court... Another plea to Congress for help.

Without anti-trust protection or collective bargaining, this will never happen because their current rules violate the law.

It's nearly impossible to guess this far out. Roll the clock back to August, and all the experts had this as a stacked QB class with 5 QBs projected in the first round:
Mendoza
Sellers
Nussmeier
Clubnik
Mateer
CBS sports even had all 5 of them going in the top 15.

Shocking we only gave up 1 run there. 3 hit batters in one inning is certainly a start

Ole Miss wide receiver Izaiah Hartrup will return in 2026. Granted a 7th year of eligibility by the NCAA.
Mostly played special teams for us last year (punt and kick return). Was a good WR at the FCS level before joining OM last year so may be able to play himself into the rotation

I mean we kept Tom Luke around after firing Matt. It's not unheard of.
But yeah nice pickup for us - an analyst with a ton of experience is always a good thing.
