It's how I got started. I watched the 2010 World Cup with some interest

I watched the 2014 world cup and got hooked. Next thing I knew I was up at 6:00 am on Saturdays. I just had my first son in May, he'll be introduced to Soccer before baseball.

That's the under looked part of "growing the game"

People hear it and think a 12 year old is going to watch and pick up a ball and turn into our starting midfielder 10 years down the road. He's already a lost cause, but he might have kids one day that start when they can walk

I mean soccer has been my favorite sport since I really got into it in 2010 after the WC. I was the most casual of casuals back then. I think plenty will watch more. 2/3 of my kids play competitively now. I think I kicked a ball a handful of times in my life before they started.

The World Cup is my favorite sporting event.

Club soccer is extremely boring

2006 World Cup did it for me. I bought the fifa world cup game that year. We played it non stop in college. Eventually, I started watching the epl and recognized the names from the World Cup and the game. I eventually picked a team. Now, 20 years later, I still set alarms to watch Arsenal when they have an early game on the weekend.

I occasionally watch some MLS. Every now and then I’ll meet a friend at a bar
and watch Premier League…

To be fair the mls is a terrible product and the fans of most teams make every game a damn pride festival so it turns off the casual sport fan.

Yep. I don't watch MLS for exactly this reason.

I get it in Portland, Seattle and Austin. However, the other ones it’s forced. The most fans make it hard to want to be near them. Then you have the issue that it’s not the best players in the world. ATL United had it right the first two years having exciting young guys from South American countries. The problem is you can’t have a winning national team if the American players aren’t in the current best leagues and you can’t have the mls being a place for old stars to retire. It’s a pickle for the MLS and they are going to chase the dollar today instead of building it up.

I lock in for the World Cup, my kid always has EPL on at the house, but it's more background noise for me. I don't have a team I follow, and feel like it's too late to get one, but I do have players I like and root for.

We spend so much time at the soccer field 2/3 of the year I don't really want to turn on an MLS game on Thursday night.

Been to a couple MLS games, once to watch Zlatan in Houston, another to watch a family friend play, honestly I'd rather watch a competitive high school aged soccer game.

World Cup is a lot of fun. I just can’t get into club ball where I don’t give a shite about their town or team.
I was here for a long time, but eventually found teams to root for based on playstyle and tactics I found enjoyable to watch.

The problem I'm finding is that this type of fandom is flimsy because all it takes is a coaching change and I'm homeless again. I was ride or die with Klopp's Liverpool but now I'm empty.

On the other hand, it has gotten me to watch A LOT of soccer because I'm generally just looking for something to latch onto and good games to watch.

MLS is unwatchable trash and Americans will never care about European sports teams.

The only way Americans start to care and it’s happening is more national team guys playing bigger roles for teams in the EPL. You still have the issue of once that player leaves the American fan isn’t attached to the team.

The MLS needs to get better and they need the fans of clubs to stop being dorks.

I root for the Saints and Pelicans because they're the local teams.

That’s fair and logical

I think for most people, they either grew up playing/loving the sport or got hooked after a World Cup. As lame as it is, me and my friends grew up playing fifa and that’s a big reason why I’ve always liked the sport

As far as not having a local team, that’s really just an issue at the beginning. The most common advice people give is just to start watching the premier league on Saturday and Sunday mornings and it won’t take long for you to gravitate towards a team who you like watching or has players you like watching.

Once you start following a specific team (for whatever reason that is), you’ll get hooked and it doesn’t take very long for them to become one of “your teams”

I picked Liverpool cause one of the first games I watched on tv was the 2005 Champions League final aka the miracle in Istanbul. Steven Gerrard was also my favorite player. These days you can watch any premier league team you want. They used to really only show the “big 6” teams on tv so choosing one of those logically made the most sense

Now, I’m just as emotionally attached to Liverpool games as I am for Astros and LSU

A good majority of the elite players were signed with a pro club by the time they're 10.

Sure. Sure. Sure. Just like all the Swimming and Curling that we watch outside of the Olympics.

I think if the USA had a top league with matches played in the USA, then that would create more fans in the USA. The timing of matches and the disconnect between our location and the locations of top teams is one of the main reasons why people don’t watch here. If the MLS was a top 5 league people would watch it and attend games.

Call me crazy, but I can’t get emotionally hooked as a fan for a team that isn’t local. I’ve never understood people who could be Lakers fans while living in Louisiana, and I’m not saying that as an insult, I just can’t make myself care about a team that I have no “connection” to.
