New Casuals

Not a new casual. Been a longtime casual since the first iteration of the NASL, when Pele was at the Cosmos. They used to show the Bundesliga replays on Saturday afternoons (I think). Franz Beckenbauer was a beast.

Saturday nights on PBS. It was a condensed version of the match of the week. The late, great Toby Charles was the announcer.

YES! Thank you. Toby Charles. Wow, a blast from the past.

I’m not pretending. This sport is unwatchable. Officiating is inconsistent at best. Players are flopping everywhere. I suppose if it’s all you know it is better than nothing

They’ll probably watch US Soccer games.

You still sure about that? This USMNT team just made sure there is zero casual interest for Gold Cup and Friendlies over the next four years.

So much damage done in 90+ minutes.

That’s Gold Cup and friendlies… why would we expect casual interest when we’re beating Haiti 4-0 for the 5838283th time?

What do we have to look forward to until 2030? Mexico a few times and a Copa? Then at least the qualifying in hostile Central American stadiums can be pretty cool…

While we’re on the subject of interest, I’d love to know how the games on Fox not involving the U.S. (or Mexico for that matter) are doing in the ratings…
