The only time I watch soccer is during the world cup, and it's awesome. Yesterday's games Mexico Vs England Brazil Vs Norway
were off the chain, intense and awesome. Round of sixteen just upped the intensity by a lot. I can't wait for today's games. I'm pretty sure I enjoy the World Cup more than any other sporting event . At the same time, I just can't see myself watching an MLS game or some european LEAGUE game. but at the same time, I can maybe see myself maybe checking out a local semi pro, new orleans jesters?, match, maybe becoming a fan of that.

It's such a prohibitive thing for the US then. Maybe when these super jets come out that greatly drop the time it takes to travel from the US to Europe, they could have a couple of east coast teams in the EPL or Spanish league? Again, probably far fetched. Sucks.
The MLS is already difficult playing between 4 time zones, varying elevation, and climates compared to European Leagues where the Euro teams would never agree to adding the MLS to the Champions League much less the EPL with promotion and relegation. Similar to having a permanent NFL team in Europe would be a nightmare.

It'll happen for some. I didn't get into soccer until the 2002 World Cup, and then about 3-4 years later started getting interested in the Premier League. Been watching Europe's top leagues ever since, but mostly the Premier League, tChampionship (since Paramount+'s coverage, but always followed scores), and some Bundesliga. Occasional La Liga and Serie A.

Ligue 1?

Maybe, but if Americans start featuring more routinely for these well-known teams in the top leagues, they'll care.

Some, maybe. But your average sports fan isn’t going to be interested in soccer to a great extent until the competition here in the US is up to par. Is that ever going to happen? Who knows?

You should want and encourage more people to get into soccer, not be a complete douche about it.

No one says that about swimming and curling. Esp. not curling.

Because the domestic viewership of this World Cup and the US looking competitive, there will be a lot more stories like yours.

Slowly but surely it'll gain popularity.

That and America has not had their Micheal Jordan of soccer.

If we had a player that is in the conversation for best in the world, we would see an influx of players and supporters.

I've been pro-growth and a non-douche for 30 years, ticket prices for even the non US games made me want to go full douche gate keeper and shrink the game.

That's a very good point.

Michael was immensely great for basketball.

Tiger brought in an audience that had never acknowledged golf existed, much like a lot of Americans and soccer. We need a Tiger. Without the drug abuse.

We have posts of people wanting to know what club to root for in non world cup years.

Why wouldn't that continue?

Looking strictly at Total Annual Viewing Minutes (how much actual time Americans spend glued to the screen watching a sport over a year)

NFL: Over 300 Billion Minutes
Soccer: 80 Billion Minutes
MLB: ~58.2 Billion Minutes (Postseason heavily carries this)
NBA: Over 50 Billion Minutes

Soccer viewership is very fragmented. MLS might not be up to par. But if you include the various leagues, it's the second most watched sport in our country.

If you like this, you would like the champions league.

It's a similar style tournament with all of the top European clubs. A lot of players you watched yesterday play for clubs that are or have been in the Champions league.

Problem is it's not played in one month. It's played over the course of the season.

I find that hard to believe.

The Nike advertising campaign behind a universally recognized American would also go along ways.

Tyler Adams had less screen time than LeBron James and Channing Tatum in the full “Rip The Script” advert. Flo may be a Nike athlete, but I think the first timers and casuals will have a difficult time seeing an American with a British accent.

Having to watch too many Spain games is bad for the growth of the sport.

I like the excitement of the loser go home part. I didn't watch much group play. Watched thousands of dollars' worth with my son in select/travel soccer but without the excitement of loser go home, the flopping is just too hard to watch.
