It would be better if the entire player has to be past the second to last defender, rather than just one body part

I love how there is offsides or positional rules in almost every damn sport but this is the only one people ever bitch about

Illegal procedure for football.

Not enough men on the line, player not set at the snap, illegal motion, player not covered, ineligible receiver down the field (this one is just as frustrating as offside in soccer...I said it), etc., etc.

There's all kinds of stupid rules in every sport. Basketball has time limits on being in the paint for crying out loud (granted, basketball just sort of ignores its rules nowadays).

Baseball not only has official rules, it also has "Unspoken" rules that people are supposed to adhere to. I don't know how you're supposed to learn those rules if they arent spoken,,,but there you are.

ONe body part can also keep the attacker onside.

It's a delicate balance performed by both sides.

What’s better about forcing defenses into low blocks? You couldn’t even run offside traps anymore. Open space in the attacking third disappears and the game becomes substantially more defensive/boring

The Wenger rule has no traction where it matters (UEFA) for a reason

Think of it being opposite of basketball being allowed to camp out on your opponents goal and wait for a pass. Then realize the govt stepped in and said it's politically incorrect to do that so no more break away passes. Stay behind the defender unless he kicks it to time your sprint to goal.

No offsides would probably lead to less scoring

Teams would just congregate in the box and send in balls trying for headers or rebound goals. Think what a corner kick is and watching that all game and nothing else.

They aren’t “unspoken.” They’re “unwritten.”

Canada league will trial the “daylight” offside rule next season. Will only be offside if there is daylight between you and the 2nd to last defender (goalkeeper is usually the last defender). Apparently there is support in fifa to change to that if it works out.

If this is what I’m thinking it is (similar to the forward pass rule in the NFL), then that’s what would make the most sense to me. Still allow the offensive player to make a break for it, but some part of the offensive player has to be behind some part of the second to last defender.

Same. Like is the point of soccer to not beat the defender?

Kind of.

In the same way it is also the point of football to beat the defender.

And there is also offside in football.

Receivers cannot just go stand in the end zone before the play. That would be dumb.

But unlike football, soccer is continuous play, not set plays. So offside has to be applied differently in soccer from when the ball is played forward. But it is a similar concept.

That Ronaldo offsides goal was a thing of beauty

I didn’t understand that to save my life. That’s the one where he was by himself and got called for offside, right? He was leaning to far forward?

Stuff like that ruins it for the average person that’s trying to be a soccer fan.

Yep. Because part of his head and maybe part of his foot if I remember right, were past, he was called for the offsides. I totally get the reason for the offsides rules, I just feel like it’s too strict.

Hell, even making it to where 50% of your body can’t be past will make a huge difference.

No offensive team member can be closer to the goal than the defensive team when the ball is kicked forward. Doesn't have to be a shot at the goal it could just a normal pass to one of the other offensive players. Pay attention to the defense when the offense is going forward. Many play up in a straight line to keep the offensive player in check from receiving a pass and pressing for the goal. Something like that anyway.

This statement isn't any different than people watching American football and complaining that a touchdown pass is called back due to an offensive lineman being downfield or too many players in motion.

If you keep watching American football though you see that those rules were installed to actually make the game more entertaining.

A decent point can be made that all the video reviews in all the sports, even if they get it right, diminish the immediate excitement.

But, we have them mainly because we got on message boards and call in shows and bitched about missed calls that you could clearly see on replays making the games unwatchable.

Perfectly said.

Even if the daylight rule is implemented you’re still going to have technology ruling on razor thin margins. “Well is his heel completely clear of the defender’s toe or not?”

Then the response will be “What difference did that one inch being clear of his toe or not really make? Change the rule!”

It’s pretty simple. No part of your body (that’s capable of playing the ball - so hands and arms don’t count) can be past the last defender when the pass is made towards you.

It’s also not offside if the player with the ball passes it backwards.

People hate VAR (sometimes for good reason like with Balogun) but I don’t see any problem with it for offside. You have to draw the line somewhere. Any attempt at changing it or “giving a cushion” to the attacker is just going to move the line that VAR is looking at. You’ll always have marginal offside calls.

Is average person someone that doesn’t want to take the time to understand the rules? They aren’t difficult.

But yes, the rule is shite. Too many beautifully timed runs getting called back. All to have a 1 goal snoozefest.

If he was offside it wasn't a beautifully time run was it.
