This has been coming up a lot more on X, that VAR (especially in light of Balogun's red card) shouldn't be creating fouls that weren't awarded on the field. But the offsides reviews that show two fingers were closer to the goal than the defender justifying an offsides call... Eyeroll.

Solid argument. But as someone who has played both, it’s so much different.

Because the soccer field is so massive, allowing offsides would create these huge gaps all over the field and it just would be chaos.

The game would completely change.

Then they’d put another offensive player to outnumber the defender for another cherry picker and then the defense puts another player back there and so on and so on. Or you could just let the game play like it is and part of the strategy is beating the offside trap or catching in an offsides trap. It’s fine the way it is.

The point where I knew I was right: I paused the debate to say how much I’ve enjoyed the World Cup and the spectacle surrounding it, and even that got 5 downvotes and zero upvotes. Sour grapes/sore losers.
