Why doesn’t the WR just stand in the end zone. Why doesn’t a hockey player just stand by the goal and wait for the puck. Why doesn’t the (yawn) (yawwwwwwn)

Same here, although I get offsides, but it’s a dumb rule IMO. I don’t know what constitutes a yellow vs red vs no card though.

Its basically a moving line of scrimmage

So totally not a line of scrimmage.

As someone said, the Ronaldo goal was a perfect example. He’s not allowed to outrun the defender and break free to receive a pass. Then WTF is the point of speed & athleticism? It’s the whole point of sports. And what incentive does the defender have to get past him and guard him if he can’t receive the ball otherwise?

If he could, a defensive back would just stand next to him. No point to it so not a valid example.

The cherry picking argument just doesn’t hold up. In basketball, a guy can just stand by his goal. But then the other team would just stand someone next to him. And it just means it’s 4 vs. 4 instead of 5 vs. 5 at the other end. No advantage or disadvantage for either team.

You make a fair point.

In soccer this is discouraged as they don't want the game to be long passes with battles to see who can come down with the ball all game. That would get boring and repetitive.

In soccer the intricacies of the game with midfield passes and build up toward the goal are valued. Not long kicks from box to box to see who luckily comes away with the ball.

Right or wrong that is partially what is behind the offside rule.

How? That’s what made Ronaldo offsides.

The defender has no reason to get between Ronaldo and the goal if Ronaldo can’t receive the pass if he’s past the defender.

No Ronaldo timed his run just slightly early. As long as he times it properly he of course can outrun defenders and get behind them.

But not until the ball is already passed, right?
Again, makes no sense. Passing a ball to someone who already got open is the point of ball sports (or non-boring ball sports).

I can see why people from other countries watch soccer - it’s the only game in town. But for viewers who grow up with other sports, it’s the single thing that ruins soccer.

Defenders use the offsides trap all the time

And speed and athleticism matter a lot bc you have to start from the same line… so not sure i get what you mean

The spirit of the rule, to prevent goal camping, has absolutely nothing to do with how the rule is written and enforced.

They need to revise the rule so that it actually addresses what it's supposed to address.

This doesn’t make sense. If a “cherry picker” stood near the goal and the other team posted someone next to him, there would be zero incentive for long passes to see who comes down with it.

He doesn't understand he is contradicting himself and it is hilarious.

Where did I contradict myself?

I’ve shot down the cherry picking argument.

A player can’t outrun the defender, get open, and then have ball passed to him. That makes no sense and defeats the purpose of sports.

If you beat the defender, you get punished for it. It goes against everything sports is supposed to be
