Same.
Like is the point of soccer to not beat the defender?

You ever wonder why an offensive player just doesn't hang out next to the goal the entire game?

That's okay.

I've watched American Football my entire life and for the life of me I can't figure what constitutes a catch.

Any body part that can score cannot be past the second to last defender. Goalie is normally the last.

But yes, the rule is shite. Too many beautifully timed runs getting called back. All to have a 1 goal snoozefest.

That Ronaldo offsides goal was a thing of beauty

The ball or last defender is the LOS (whichever is closer to goal). The pass is like the snap.

Its basically a moving line of scrimmage.

By definition they aren’t beautifully timed

Not how the real rule reads, but to make it simple.

If an offensive player is behind the last defensive player when the ball is passed to them they are offside. This is what you will see 99% of the time.

Technically it's offside if an offensive player is closer to the goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent at the moment of the pass.

Essentially to prevent something like cherry picking in basketball, there must be two opponents (typically the keeper and one defender) between an attacking player and the goal when the ball is played by the attacking player’s teammate. The only exception would be if the attacking player is still in his own half when the ball is played by a teammate.

How people find that more complicated than offside or icing in hockey, I’m not sure.

Then the opposing team could just leave a defender back there with him.

The way it is now, it would be like if in football the receiver is not allowed to run past the defensive back.

True. I’m just agreeing that it makes soccer tough to watch

I also didn’t say beautifully timed, I said the goal was a thing of beauty

And throw-ins, goal kicks and corner kicks.

This just makes zero sense to me. The entire point of ball sports is to break free from the defender.

ETA: So if a defender is at a disadvantage and is going to get beat, he can just choose not to defend because the offensive player can’t legally be past him.

The better comparison would be if the receiver was allowed to run past the line of scrimmage before the snap

No one wants to see cherry picking

Yeah Why make it harder to score than it already is? And I don't understand it either.

Nah, cause in soccer the ball is already in play when offsides happens - thus “after the snap”.

It's to prevent a player cherry picking near the opponent's goal the entire time. I get that. But I hate the effect of the rule though. Oftentimes defenders go to sleep and completely lose track of the guy they are guarding. But no worry, they will get saved by the offsides cal anyways.

There are reasons. But think of it as having to break free from the defenser but only when the ball is passed. Makes it more difficult right?

I don't understand why a batter is awarded a chance to get to 1st base when they strike out just because the baseball touched the ground.

There are some sports rules that are questionable, sure. But I think soccer offside is necessary.

I get the need for an offsides, I just find it absolutely insane that your big toe or giant nose can be the reason you’re offsides.

The cherry picking argument just doesn’t hold up. In basketball, a guy can just stand by his goal. But then the other team would just stand someone next to him. And it just means it’s 4 vs. 4 instead of 5 vs. 5 at the other end. No advantage or disadvantage for either team.
