way I would drive through a 70 mile tunnel. If you are not claustrophobic when you start, you will be by the end of it.
And odds are you’d be the only one attempting it at that time.
Except for the outlaws who block the tunnel to kill and rob you, of course

Use a double hull with the inner hull floating in a mag lev environment.
Any movement is compensated for by the air gap between hulls.

I wasn’t responding to “them”. Another poster asked a question, and I answered it. This isn’t a new concept or idea, and there’s reasons it’s never been done before

Yeah, kind of makes no sense. Except, Im thinking it's going to be a long tunnel under the Bering Sea, like the tunnel under the sea between England and France.
I wonder if Putin wants to sell us oil? Only sense it might make is for using the train for some kind of trade both ways.
Putin wanted to be part of NATO at one time and multiple Prez's have turned him down. A trade alliance could move that forward, I guess maybe.

That's money he needs for his newest track suit and the 2026 Bugatti Mistral.

Arctic is the next resource frontier. Nations are scrambling for dominance, the USA is behind.

Will never happen. Those weather conditions are just too extreme.

I dont like Zelenskyy but I do have to say that he has a decent sense of humour (especially for English being his 2nd or 3rd language)

Everything that Elon is doing on earth (self driving, solar, robots, boring, batteries) is a test field for Mars

Pretty cool, I think. Can someone who knows explain in more detail what benefits this would have, beyond the important symbolism? Easier access to the fine arse Russian women
Not really. The women in the Asian part of Russia are not attractive. The attractive Russian women are in the European part of Russia. Even with a road and/or rail connection between Alaska and Siberia it would be cheaper, faster, and easier to fly between the USA and the European part of RussIa.

It is funny to me that you can build a 70 mile tunnel between two continents for about the price of two NFL Stadiums in 2025.

It would probably be like the the Chunnel. You don't drive it yourself. You would get on a cargo train which would take your vehicle from one side to the other. While in transit. There would be shops and restaurants to visit.

Roads will be built for resource gathering. It's not meant to be a travel destination. Think ice road truckers.

You are thinking about it as it is now. This would spur growth in a region of Russia that has vast resources, but Russia can't develop on their own. Those resources will end up being developed by the US or China. This could be a wedge between China and Russia. Trump needs to push this hard.
Deep down, I believe that Putin wants an economic and geopolitical partnership with the United States States.
I think that is what he and his were expecting and hoping for after the fall of the USSR, but our leaders were to short-sighted and small-minded to make it happen at the time - perhaps a product of their time and environment.
Putin/Russia needs to see a 180 in geopolitical relations first, and I do think Trump is working on it behind the scenes, despite what he says publicly.
The economic + geopolitical duo of Russia + U.S. ? Would give China a run for its money that’s for sure.
Why would Putin want China instead of the U.S.?

I guaranty we can't afford it.

Honestly, I'd consider driving from America to Russia just for the experience. There's really nothing to do in that part of Russia, though, and I'm definitely not driving the length of Eurasia.

Hell no! It would be easier for a few Alaskan cave men, but do you know how long you’d have to drive from Ferriday to get to fine-arse Russian women. Cheaper and faster to fly from anywhere in the lower 48, and probably from anywhere in Alaska. Once you reach the Russian shore you are a long way from those women. I don’t see the point.
And lol at $8 billion. The new Baton Ruge bridge is estimated at $3 billion with road improvements, and you know that will double. They can’t even work up there for eight months out of the year due to the cold. (They could work underground, but the tunnel is only about half the work.)

Yeah, there was a land bridge, and it was warmer. There were probably Tiki Bars along the way.

It could be kinda cool with a self-driving car à la Vegas plans.

Musk's firm's could bring the cost down to $8bn
No way it is that cheap. Have they looked at the cost of cement and other resources needed? Just the new Mobile Bridge and Bayway is anticipated to cost over 3.5 billion, the Lake Chuck Bridge and approaches will cost 2.3 billion, heck even the Chunnel cost around 15-20 billion pounds in today’s money. The Chunnel was only 37 km long.
8 Billion is mighty cheap. I would anticipate costs ballooning 100 billion for the tunnel and another 100 billion for the approach rails. I think the closest rails are in central Alaska but they do not connect to any lines in Canada. There is a proposal to extend the line to Alberta but that is still under consideration.
You also may have to contend with locals for grift and wildlife protection and build the train above the permafrost layer like the TransAlaskan pipeline further inflating the cost.
