A November report commissioned by local criminal justice leaders on the causes of chronic overcrowding in the Caddo Correctional Center identified mounting bail costs as one reason why inmates are staying behind bars awaiting trial for longer than the system can handle. The report found that the average stay at the CCC increased for individuals charged with every kind of offense over the last ten years.

The median cost of bail for Caddo detainees went from $3,490 in 2012 to $12,500 in 2022, the report found.

It’s because the D.A. essentially shut down prosecutions for 3 years.

Did you read the question that I have posed to you repeatedly in multiple threads?

No?

What’s your problem with pre-trial diversion?

How about if I quote it:

quote:

"This is especially notable based on research findings that money bail (as opposed to non-financial release options) does not improve court appearance or public safety, and in some studies has been associated with a higher likelihood of rearrest."

Bail is enforced to guarantee the accused will show up for court appearances. Do you think people should have to pay more money because their bills have increased?

Absolutely nothing

99% of these people won't be eligible. You can't have a record and usually you can't get it with violent crimes or multiple bills.

And the article is about a bunch of people with extensive histories,. violent criminal charges, and multiple bills.

Do you know the difference between an arrest and a conviction?

How do you know who it’s about? I didn’t see any names printed. Unless Caddo parish is that small that you’re familiar with the arrests, charges, and convictions of everyone who passes through there.

Edit: I think I misunderstood your post but I imagine you’re probably right about their eligibility for pre-trial diversion.

bail is only higher for black people.

they've actually lowered it for white folks.

Or I understand how to read data dealing with large numbers of people, especially in an area of expertise.

Caddo is a liberal parish. Don't forget that part of the equation, either.

ETA: diversion also isn't likely to be offered until some time after arrest as well

Yep, I misunderstood your reply at first.

It seems that if someone isn’t able to afford bail, that would equate to excessive bail, which is prohibited by the Eighth Amendments. Obviously the Supreme Court disagrees.

Ruminate on this, the 8th also doesn’t guarantee bail.

No idea. But I do know that if one simply doesn’t commit crimes, they will not have to worry about bail.

One arrest is one thing.

If you keep getting rearrested while on bail, it tends to say “Maybe bail should be fricking revoked.”

Do you disagree with the Constitution’s guarantee that all accused are innocent until proven guilty?

It sounds like you’re claiming every person arrested is guilty.
