Because every government is a legitimized mafia operating in cohesion with one another.

The human population is rabblerousing and the tried-and-true methodology for getting people hyper-nationalistic is war. This Ukrainian engagement is perfect for all sides involved, as their own people are less likely to topple their governments during times of economic insecurity and war.

Because it isn't a war with the goal you think they have in mind... In mind. It's got other goals altogether.

How'd that work with Saddam, prior to the US occupying the entire country?

You mean the way this guy's military used overwhelming force and rapidly seized territory while Saddam Hussein's disbanded?

Russia hasn't made all the right decisions or performed flawlessly. But the obvious strategy has been to avoid having to occupy a lot of territory (outside of heavily ethnically Russian areas) and to try to pin down and destroy Ukrainian forces.

1. This isn't a real war. It is just sword rattling at best, extortion at worst.
2. They are smart enough to know they don't want anything of what would happen if they just flat out obliterated and took Ukraine.

do they? They tried to take Ukraine in the first month. They didn't have the logistical capacity part their rail heads to support themselves, so they got pushed back and lost 75% of what they took. They have lost over 100k men and at least half of their active armored vehicles in a year of fighting. They don't have an overwhelming army, they were a paper tiger that was hollowed out by incredible corruption. Now they are reduced to emptying prisons into Wagner group for human canon for use in WWI tactics. The short answer is they tried and failed miserably

Losing Kherson and Kharkiv was part of their master plan too, right? 4D Chess! Don't forget the feint of failing, i mean pretending to capture Kiev in 48.

Ideally, Russia would like to again have Ukraine intact as a highly productive part of Russia. There is a vast wealth of agricultural and natural resources in Ukraine.

Yes that, but also they've been making their domestic political appeal and propaganda efforts toward Ukrainians on the basis of the idea that Ukraine is a part of Russia and it doesn't make political sense in the context of your strategy to destroy what you're arguing is your own country.

They are, of course, actually destroying large areas of Ukraine in spite of this, selectively revealing it to their people, and eliding the contradictions by claiming that they're actually fighting NATO in Ukraine since the "real Ukrainians" only want union with Moscow...

1. They want it as much in tack as possible

2. They are trying to bleed nato economy which leads to 3

3. We are going back to different economic structures like the Cold War. The difference is china replaces Russia.. Russia had used this to strengthen their alliances and forge their own economic monetary supply buffering their economic problems easier.

4. Look for even more inroads in south/Central America on behalf of this new alliance. We already have seen it but I’d imagine it will grow

You’re trying hard to redeem yourself and I don’t even know why. Nobody even knows you, nobody cares. Just let it go. You keep calling attention to yourself which doesn’t help.

What is their goal? I am unsure the complexity of this. They have an overwhelming army. If they want Ukraine why don't they just take it?

that was plan "A" last February, but it failed, and they didn't have Plan B ready, so they called up reserves, emptied out the prisons, and did another round of conscription. Plan "b" is about ready, as they bought time with the reservists/prisoners and held the stalemate for the past 4-5 months.

now with half a million troops will their plan B spring offensive work or will they move to plan C.......
