I personally don’t believe their military is in very good shape. I’m sure they could simply use numbers (manpower) to win versus Ukraine, but the political climate isn’t in their favor for such a large waste of lives.

Russia has had a difficult time supplying 200,000 troops in theater. It has extensive borders to defend of many thousands of miles.

Because they are trying to take over Ukraine and control it. Does no good to have control over Ukraine if the country is destroy .

Russia is in a war of attrition because they bungled the invasion so badly that's what they are left with.

i recall massive russian move against kyiv. tanks and trucks for miles.
they approached and shelled but never occupied.
by and by logistics set in and tough sledding ensued.
retreated to participate in the taking of the black sea which has had good initial russian result and eventually just lost some of it. in a couple months after what they do for basic the 500k new troops will get to do holding actions vs modern tanks.

I heard an amazing statistic last night. With as much as we are spending in international conflicts, just 20 billion dollars could fund all of the federal authorized hurricane risk reduction systems in Southeast Louisiana.
In a 2 trillion dollar annual budget, that is pretty much a rounding error in the federal budget.
Not so sound like a peacenik, it is time we start focusing on home issues instead of international conflict.

That was the plan. It failed. Ukraine staved off the blitzkrieg, and Russian air supremacy. Now this thing is a WWI style slogfest. This was not what Putin wanted or expected. Still, there is no chance or path for Ukraine to "win." People should be at the negotiating table, but WE are scuttling that option.
