re: Where does this idea come from that supposedly 40 years ago we lived large at age 20?

And those starter homes had 30% less square footage. Roughly 30% less likely to have centralized Heating and Cooling. Not a granite countertop in sight. Vinyl flooring if you were lucky. Hardwood and tile? Don't make me laugh. That's why I laugh when they compare housing prices. I'm like dumbasses you're not comparing the same kinds of houses! Just because you call it a house doesn't mean it's the same thing LOL
While all of this is absolutely true. I thinks its more comical that they don't realize that when you take into consideration the normal rate of appreciation that $80,000 home in 1980 is $415,000 in today's dollars.

This isn’t a fact.

I survived on pinto beans with an occasional chopped hot dog thrown in for flavor, and $6/case Black Label beer for several years, making between 3.35 and 3.80 an hour part time working my way thru a Texas Tech degree. Never had AC in either my beat-up truck or whichever crappy house/apartment I happened to be living in.

I think I was $27k as a software engineer in Silicon Valley. 1985 I got a roommate, and I rarely ate out unless a guy was taking me out.
By 1992, I was married and we somehow managed to buy a house for $300k. Our interest rate was high. And the house didn't have AC.
I worked all day, and came home and peeled wallpaper and painted my house.
When we had kids a few years later, I cooked at home. I would save change I picked up while doing laundry and would buy a treat with that change a new fancy Starbucks or ice cream. Family trips were camping trips or to visit family in Texas.
We are living larger in retirement because we sold our California home and moved to Arkansas. Plus, easier to go out with 2 vs a family of 5.

You wildly overestimate how much people get in food assistance.

Daycare supplements
Section 8 housing
Food stamps
just to name a few
Btw why isn't your company paying a living wage?

The 80's were fricking awesome. They will not ever know what they missed.

It’s like 2k a month per kid
That’s why they’re able to eat steak and crab legs every day and drive a Cadillac parked in the handicap spot

Agreed but remember how dumb you were at that age?
Acid Rain? Really people?
These are just believing the popular dumb stuff of the day same as we did, although I never bought that acid rain crap. Probably why I was inoculated against the Global Warming scam. I'd seen that grift too many times.
The young thinking they're geniuses and the greatest thing ever seen on earth is basically how we are designed. They will understand this too one day, same as our parents, and theirs, and their, and theirs....
There's nothing new here. Kids are stupid.

Oh look, a boomer circle jerk thread.

I ate so much Chef Boyardee Ramen and Chucky sirloin burger soup that I swear to God I think I was going to turn into a can.
My point isn't that young people today don't have it hard. It's just that they don't have it uniquely hard. They sit there and look at these silly memes with ledgers showing decades ago on one side and themselves on the other and they are failing to realize that you can do that with anything. If I show a video only of Michael Jordan missing shots you're going to think he sucked it basketball. Somebody else in here mentioned that each generation has had it better and that is unequivocally true. People in the ghetto today are more likely to have central air than well off people in 1930. Yes that's just one example but the point is each generation is head massive steps forward in quality of life available to people. Hell most people in the seventies didn't own a fricking dryer and had to hang their clothes out. I have sympathy for young people and the difficulties it takes to survive when you are first getting started. It's just their constant whining and bitching like they're the first in the history of the world to go through it that's fricking annoying

Just to completely lazy response and especially funny given the absolute multitude of gen Z circle jerk anti-boomer shite all over the internet that puts about as much thought into the actual subject as it took them to eat their morning donut

Absolutely. And I was just talking the other day about one thing I'm glad that I don't have to put up with that young people now have to put up with is having your whole fricking life recorded. No one's going to get me to say that young people don't have it hard. Young people have always had it hard and today's crop is no different
But I had the good sense to know I had it better then my parents did in a whole fricking lot better than my grandparents did. There was no world war going on when I was a teenager. There wasn't even a Vietnam war going on when I was a teenager. I had it fricking good compared to them. Which is why I had a positive outlook on life even though I was broke

I do. I pay my employees well above the average for my industry in the area we are in.

To be fair I don't even know what the frick the term living wage means. Living wage to who? A single dude with no kids? A single mom with three kids? A person with two teenagers about to go to college? Is the employer supposed to base what they're going to pay a person based on the individuals unique circumstances rather than what the job is actually worth? These people that use that phrase throw it out like it's got some sort of actual definition. It's weird

And here's the best part! I did pretty well in terms of dating. I was never short on having available arse.
This is an opportunity that young men today don't have as good.
Thanks to feminism the pool of good dateable women is much smaller. So many of them have the princess syndrome and won't even talk to a dude if he isn't at least 6 feet tall and makes 6 figures.

To be fair, i think a lot of young people are asking for cheaper type housing. They dont need or want it as big and as nice as things are and would rather pay less for it.
I moved my son to an apartment in knoxville essentially on ut campus. This place is nice as hell. A million times more luxurious than where i lived at school. But that is 75% of the available stock around campus. The cheaper/more dilapatated shite is eaten up immediately - proof to me that the young arent demanding these things - the parents are. Or industry at least knows the parents will pay.
