Where does this idea come from that supposedly 40 years ago we lived large at age 20?

I'm continually fascinated by this General belief among young people today that seems to think that those of us that are say 55 and older somehow had it easy working low-level jobs. When I was 18 years old I was working full-time and I wasn't making minimum wage(night stock paid better than min wage) I was a night stock guy at a grocery store back when that was a thing. The furniture in my first apartment was the following. A double bed that had been mine since I was about 9 years old that my parents let me take. A futon I bought at a used furniture store that was possibly the ugliest piece of furniture you've ever seen. A TV stand about the size of your typical nightstand that I got at a yard sale. I didn't have a dresser so I bought cubicles at some place like Kmart or something that I put together and that's where my clothes went. My theoretical dining room table was literally a cable roll that some friend with a truck helped me hijack from a construction site. Oh I forgot my TV. A 13-in black and white with antenna. And no I'm not 80 years old this shite was in the late '80s and trust me black and white TVs were no longer really a thing. I couldn't afford cable so I survived with the three channels my antenna could get. All of this while driving a two door Toyota Tercel with vinyl seats 4 Speed air condition but no stereo. My apartment was perfectly clean but it was less than 400 square feet. If you asked young people today to live like that they would have a complete fricking meltdown. But almost everybody I knew was living like that. I don't know who's telling these stupid fricks the fairy tales they are believing but it's downright comical to hear.
Edit to add.......... I think one of the fundamental problems is that Young people think they are supposed to be able to move out and keep all of the Conveniences of the day. Like you're supposed to be able to have that average apartment but also still have one of the newer cell phones. Have a decent computer. Have high-speed internet access. Drive a relatively okay car etc etc. Well trust me even in the late 80s color TV was pretty much expected along with cable. And it was pretty much expected that you had stereo in your car. I couldn't afford those things so I didn't have them. Go get your average apartment in a less than great neighborhood. And survive on a 6 year old used phone from Amazon. And stop updating your computers every 3 years! And drive a 10 year old beater

My first job out of college I was making $24k. That’s the equivalent of $12/hour.
My college kids are making more than that in their part time jobs.
Let them suffer like we did… it builds character and appreciation.

They also don’t seem to go and get roommates anymore. It’s like everyone wants their own apartment.

My brother and sister in law helped tremendously, but if that's easy street, I would hate to see the skids. God provided when some untoward things happened but we got through it, thankfully. This whole boomer thing pisses me off so badly.

I swear to God that if you put the average 24-year-old in the living conditions that I lived for a good 5 years they would require fricking therapy. Imagine being in my apartment when there's nothing good on the three channels that I got! No internet. No cell phone. If I wanted to entertain myself I had to come up with something in my own fricking head. And here's the best part! I did pretty well in terms of dating. I was never short on having available arse. And frankly I was having the time of my life! Those might have been some of the most fun happy years of my entire existence

I'm 55, most everyone I knew and myself, we lived in the ghetto when we moved out. You always hear, "we can't afford to live in a decent area" well we simply didn't live in decent areas and we were ok with that.

The problem is these idiots see some meme breaking down what supposedly was going on 40 50 years ago and because they want to believe it they literally just ignore anybody who actually lived it when we tell them that's fricking fantasy.

My first apartment was at least 30 years old. Admittedly I managed it without a roommate because I didn't want a roommate. But I can promise you 30-year-old Apartments are not in the new suburbs!

Wow you really had it hard. You are really a hero for lifting yourself up by your bootstraps. Congratulations on all your success Boomer.

Wait until they realize that we were buying our stater homes at 4x our salaries with 8% mortgage rates too!

Not quite a boomer here but close. And yes I did have it harder than you guys it's not even fricking close. Grow up and stop being a goddamn overgrown toddler and make something for yourself rather than crying about shite that didn't even exist

And yet you were able to afford an apartment. That’s not the case today. That’s the issue.

Not only that, have you seen the prices of avocados and soy milk? At least White Claw is still somewhat affordable.

And those starter homes had 30% less square footage. Roughly 30% less likely to have centralized Heating and Cooling. Not a granite countertop in sight. Vinyl flooring if you were lucky. Hardwood and tile? Don't make me laugh. That's why I laugh when they compare housing prices. I'm like dumbasses you're not comparing the same kinds of houses! Just because you call it a house doesn't mean it's the same thing LOL

They are misinformed. It goes against the victim mentality they are all taught in schools now. Every time we hire someone in college or fresh out of college, they are shocked that they don’t automatically get $20 per hour.

This is plainly false. It's like you dumbasses are fricking immune to information. I could afford an apartment I just couldn't afford the average apartment. You stupid frick seem to think you're supposed to be able to afford the average apartment on below average pay. None of us thought that
