Trump needs a crash course in separation of powers
quote:

"One of the things I'm going to do if I win... I'm going to open up our libel laws so when they write purposely negative and horrible and false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money," Trump said during a rally in Fort Worth, Texas.

"We're going to open up those libel laws so when The New York Times writes a hit piece, which is a total disgrace, or when the Washington Post, which is there for other reasons, writes a hit piece, we can sue them and win money instead of having no chance of winning because they're totally protected," he said. "We're going to open up libel laws and we're going to have people sue you like you've never got sued before."

How is the executive going to re-write interpretations of the First Amendment? How is the federal executive going to change state law causes of action?

I doubt his supporters care about the nuances of federalism, but can we at least admit this guy just spouts off whatever is on his mind without thinking of the real-life prospects of pulling it off? This isn't even getting into the litigious nature of Trump and the historical reluctance of Republicans to open up new avenues to litigation.

Cue the cuck and melt and all that silliness.

He needs a crash course in a bunch of things-- Sarah Palin had a better command of government and civics (I'm not calling Trump dumb, he's actually a smart guy he just doesn't care enough to learn things).

Obama has set a precedent to just executive order anything he can't accomplish legally, Trump can just go that route if need be.

I almost set the o/u of posts until Obama was mentioned at 4 in my OP.

So if you're cool with Trump doing it, can you go back and retract all your bitching about Obama?

Also-- the statement on its face is actually kind of terrifying-- he's essentially saying that when he's President he's going to use the power of the state to crush the free press.

Tell me how say Limbaugh works in an environment where he's open to a slander suit for everything he says or Bill Maher can be sued by an Iman, or Maddow by Fred Phelps or Megyn Kelly by Trump-- and that's just commmentators-- imagine if every investigative piece even with facts can be met by a lawsuit that isn't dismissed out of hand due to NYT vs Sullivan, Trump's little suggestion is how authoritarianism begins.

So now we as conservatives like suing people and trial lawyers. Got it.

How so many people have fallen for this fricking con artist and are just eating up whatever crazy thing he says up is truly awe inspiring.

He's got some great lawyers, great guys, great friends of his, great lawyers and they're going to write a brand new Constitution, very modern, very classy, very to the point with no weird words.

It's going to be a tremendous Constitution and it will be so aaammmaaazziing that your head will spin.

I'm not down with Trump wading into this.

I might not have a problem if we as a nation were a little more open to the press being held accountable for Lying and being dishonest, which is hard to accomplish but the press is pretty unaccountable and as a result we get lied to ALL DAY, EVERY DAY.

Trump is just oozing freedom as he talks about curtailing one of our biggest freedoms. But don't worry the muzzle he puts on the media will be great, everyone in the media will love it. He knows this because he has a lot of friends in the media who love him.

Things like this should matter to some of his voters. Unfortunately they dont. They are perfectly content to put a poster up on their celing of Trump tossing around a water bottle.

He just says shite to appeal to the crowd of mouth breathers.

Note how he used Yankee newspapers and not the Dallas Morning News in his little example.
