Ability to learn and read are two different things. I didn’t feel like reading à long post on a Saturday when I’m off of work.

Yes I missed it because I really didn’t feel the need to read such a long comment.

No it doesn’t mean I’m stupid. Get a life if you think that.

Was at a Halloween thing for my daughter tonight and nurse was trying to explain free healthcare plan to everyone. I don’t know if she got through to anyone.

1st she talked about how all the people on Medicade and Medicare and other type of government assistance is being paid for by our taxes and business dollars.

1. Half the cost of your medical insurance wouldn’t come out of your check each pay period.

2. Half the cost of your medical insurance wouldn’t be paid by your employer. This would save small businesses a lot of money

3. Hospitals have to write-off billions of dollars each year. This would save them money and bring down losses

4. Not going through insurance companies would save billions of dollars

She said that is why free healthcare is better and cheaper than what we are doing now

It really doesnt. You just have to cap physician and hospital pay, for those that accept it. That would open back up markets and let physicians decided what insurance they accept

They kind of already do this song and dance.

For example, Blue Cross in Louisiana has two options on the exchange, regular Blue Cross and HMO Louisiana. From what I was told when I shopped around this year after my employer provided insurance went away, both use Blue Cross’s networks of physicians, but doctors get paid less if they accept a patient with HMO Louisiana because it pays less so some doctors won’t take it or think twice about accepting patients on it. There is also a limitation on network since it limits you to doctors only in Louisiana. Because of the limitations, HMO Louisiana is cheaper.

The real sad fact is that Blue Cross has a virtual monopoly on the exchange as they are the only ones providing coverage on the Healthcare Marketplace exchange in Louisiana.

That depends on how stupid the people are who were listening to her. There's no such thing as free healthcare.

It’s almost like we should have the government fix it so we could get affordable healthcare like they promise us every election cycle. Who in charge of all 3 branches of government again and has been for a while now?

I remember democrat operatives in Harris County doing a sell job on this POS Obama legislation. At the end of his obamacare sell job he said - this is a good thing. Lying SOB. He and his "Hit Man" pal didn't like the substance of my questions.

Mafia democrats are despicable people. It's going to be hard to weed out these people from government and our universities.

All these radicals need is for America to turn over this country to them on Tuesday, November 3rd. Then it's Katy Bar the Door, these Islamo-Marxist DSA democrats are comin.

They stole everything. But not as much as they're going to steal if............

Remember when the Republicans were going to repeal this. Then they also had a plan to ‘fix’ it.

I believe the OPs point was that if health insurance didn't exist services would be less expensive.

So the insurance companies wanted to profit more...until the system failed and they went away altogether?

Yeah, o.k. That's logical.

I don't know about you personally, but the vast majority of posters here would whine until they choked on it if the Republicans did actually officially get rid of it, because it would probably be unpopular with moderates and might lose them an election.

MAGA doesn't care about doing the right thing, only sloganeering and winning the next election.

Anyway, the ACA has largely been steadily and quietly dismantled piece by piece under the radar by a combination of Republican legislation and happenstance:

quote:

• Individual Mandate Penalty Zeroed Out: The financial penalty for not having health insurance was reduced to $0, removing the legal requirement to buy coverage.
• Expiration of Enhanced Subsidies: Pandemic-era premium tax credits expired, causing average out-of-pocket premium costs to jump by 114% for subsidized enrollees.
• Marketplace Enrollment Drop: The loss of premium subsidies triggered a 12% national drop in marketplace enrollment, falling from 21.8 million down to 19.2 million.
• Spike in Deductibles: Consumers buying down to lower-tier plans to manage premium costs caused average deductibles to jump 37% to an average of $3,786.
• Elimination of Automatic Re-enrollment: Strict pre-enrollment verification processes phased out automatic plan renewals, requiring users to actively resubmit paperwork.
• Tax Credit Clawbacks: Protective liability caps were removed, forcing low-income individuals to repay the full amount of any excess advanced tax credits if their income changes.
• Restricted Immigrant Eligibility: Premium tax credits were blocked or heavily restricted for certain noncitizens and lawfully present low-income immigrants.
• Ended Year-Round Special Enrollment: Continuous year-round special enrollment windows for low-income applicants were largely terminated.
• Mass Policy Cancellations: Federal anti-fraud crackdowns canceled policies for over 760,000 individuals due to unverified income or missing immigration paperwork.
• Pivot to Alternate Plans: Rules expanded long-term access to catastrophic and short-term plans, which cost less but lack the ACA's comprehensive benefit guarantees.
• Optional Medicaid Expansion: A Supreme Court ruling allowed states to opt out of expanding Medicaid, fracturing the law's intended universal safety net.
• Medicaid Work Requirements: Federal policies allowed states to add rigid work requirements and semi-annual renewal audits, dropping millions from public coverage.

Waiting for the media to go apoplectic about this "rise in costs" as they have fuel prices.

The ACA community rating mandate and essential health benefit mandate were the largest cost drivers. They are in effect.

Medicare pays a surgeon $231 for a tonsillectomy. How much less do you want them paid?

Insurance companies have to spend 80% of every dollar on claims leaving the company with 20% to pay salaries, expenses, etc.

That's the whole ruse. That's exactly why premiums and deductibles have continued to rise and why insurance companies have made record profits under the ACA.

Think about it. This is a product that the company knows the average person with anything to lose won't do without.

You can only make 20% profit, right? You can only take one piece of the pie. So what do you do?

You make the whole pie bigger so that your 1/5 is bigger too.

You pay out more money in claims.

Wait, that sounds counterproductive, doesn't it? How do you make more money by paying out even more in claims?

Because health insurance is a very inelastic product with almost no substitutes. If you have any assets to lose, you're going to tolerate the premium and deductible increases and keep buying it.

So they just keep paying out more to justify raising the premiums and deductibles.

Don't believe me? Look at the numbers.

In 2010 the "Big Six" insurance companies' combined revenue was $360 Billion. That's in inflation-adjusted dollars.

In 2025 it was $1.1Trillion.

That's a 200% increase since Obamacare.

Now look at profits. Pre-Obamacare the Big Six profits combined were $24.5 Billion. Now they are almost $61 Billion. Almost a 150% increase. Again, that's in inflation-adjusted dollars, so we're talking about apples and apples.

Obamacare wasn't designed to "limit" insurance companies. That cap was designed to balloon them, and it has.

That's why the "designed to fail so they can usher in socialized medicine" narrative is nonsense. If it fails, all that profit vanishes for these for-profit entities that the law was obviously written for.
