also practice HIIT (high intensity interval training) which is a fancy term that means an occasional 1-minute all-out effort done a few times during a 20 or 30 minute workout.

oh i used to do T25. i know about HIIT

before i do that again i need to get a much better base and a ton more flexibility. the stretching they do isn't enough for my terrible hips (from bad posture and sitting). i had some major issues with my IT band b/c of that

hence, yoga

Saying bye to sugar and fake processed garbage completely changes the way you feel after the adjustment period.

It really is a big difference. It's crazy how much carbs from things like bread and pasta can change how you feel. When I'm doing low carb, I can eat a pound of turkey and be hungry 30 mins later

I just did Keto (LCHF) for a month. I did not like it. You cannot have fruit, bread or rice. You have to watch how many carbs you're eating.

I kind of love keto- there's something about steak, butter and heavy whipping cream that does it for me. I was such a bread addict that it surprised me that I actually enjoy this diet.

That said, I have one cheat meal a week per average- every now and again a gal needs some wine or a few tortilla chips or something- life happens.

I'm middle-aged and I really can't even describe how much better my joints etc feel since I've been eating this way.

Yes. But you just need to keep track of the carb content of what you drink.

My family is astounded my cholesterol, sugar, blood pressure are the best in the family including my kids one of whom is a nutritionist.

And I'm grilling 5 or more days a week, steak usually with decent fat content. How I have a cholesterol of 100 baffles them.

like everything, in moderation. i stick with the shitty mich ultra and new corona premier because they have around 3 carbs each. occasional red wine or even hard liquor (just not sugary mixers) is pretty low carb too.

however alcohol causes your body's weight loss to stall if you do it too often and other health problems so i try to stay away from it if i can.

Just curious, but if you were already on a Paleo diet, why did you feel the need to go full Keto? Don't traditional Paleo diets severely limit carbs anyway?
I hadn't been true to the Paleo diet for awhile and gained some of my weight back. I thought Keto would help get weight off quickly then I'd go back to Paleo to maintain.

Paleo limits carbs through the elimination of processed sugars, but you can have natural sugars.

nobody believes i'm 52. i owe alot to this diet. first time i tried it i was maybe 31 years old and couldn't believe it.

i go off it from time to time and always regret it.

you're doing it right; plan a small cheat now and then to keep you from reaching the point where you say frick IT HAND OVER THE LARGE PIZZA NOW.

eta even if you go crazy like i do when i make homemade ice cream (i'll mow through 4-5 bowls) you can only do so much damage to your weight on a one-time event.

my I'm EATING UNTIL I CANT MOVE moments are typically popeyes (maybe once a year), homemade ice cream or johnnys pizza if i'm in LA.

Eliminating processed foods and reducing sugar are good ideas. Beyond that, eating a variety in healthful amounts seems to be a good approach. I’m pretty sure that green, leafy vegetables are still good for most of us.

BTW, a lot of this of this depends upon the individual and his/her metabolism.

Some people eat to live; I live to eat. I love a variety of foods and Keto was too limiting. I lost 7 lbs in a month but I was miserable.

For me the difficulty varies by day or meal. It can be very frustrating but there are a variety of ways to avoid much of that. It can take some reading and learning new recipes and food options to get over the hump or stay on program.

I'm with you! But I missed my fruits. I had an antioxidant shake everyday - strawberries, blueberries, clementine, spinach and almond/coconut milk - and it really boosted my immune system. I'm middle-aged too so losing weight is tough but it can be done if you eat right and exercise.

my wife always wrinkles her nose and says 'you're going to weigh 500lbs if you eat that 20oz steak loaded with fat'....then i hop on the scale the next morning and i'm down 2lbs.

she cant wrap her head around the issues with the food pyramid either.

Cheap, crappy food may be credited with solving world hunger, but it has created innumerable other problems
The "Green Revolution" may have been the worst thing that every happened to humanity.

One of it's chief architects, Norman Borlaug, won the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize. In his address he issued the following warning:
quote:

"The green revolution has won a temporary success in man's war against hunger and deprivation; it has given man a breathing space. If fully implemented, the revolution can provide sufficient food for sustenance during the next three decades. But the frightening power of human reproduction must also be curbed; otherwise the success of the green revolution will be ephemeral only. Most people still fail to comprehend the magnitude and menace of the "Population Monster"...Since man is potentially a rational being, however, I am confident that within the next two decades he will recognize the self-destructive course he steers along the road of irresponsible population growth...

If the UN projections are accurate, it appears that we squandered our opportunity to act rationally.

nearly impossible to eat low carb out at restaurants unless you grab a salad. the upside is reducing how much you eat out helps your waist AND your wallet.

True. Everyone's system is different; you have to find what works for you and go with it.

I started eating only meat around twelve and drove my parents crazy. Not sure why, we always hunted and almost always cooked what we killed. I'd eat 3 or 4 big pieces of meat every night. Through high school I played sports, worked out and hunted year round and would eat one meal of meat a day. I started eating trash my freshman year of college and put on a good 40 lbs. Started eating a normal nutritious diet and felt like shite, didn't lose weight and stayed pissed off and hungry. So I went back to meat only and lost the weight and I'm not hungry. I'd read that every person needs a different diet so I assumed I had the rare meat only personal plan, turns out I was on to something

Any more than one low-carb drink a day apparently greatly diminishes the positive effects: Karl Denninger on Keto and alcohol
quote:

So if you're asking whether drinking alcohol is compatible with living a ketogenic lifestyle, the answer is "maybe." The maybe is that if you are actively trying to lose weight then no, it isn't, and by the way, it doesn't matter what form of food intake you're using in that case because alcohol will poison all of them in terms of weight loss. The old saying that "he has a beer belly" is not bull****, in short. One of the worst ways to sabotage your metabolic systems is to screw with your hunger regulation -- while it's possible to ignore that it takes an amount of willpower few possess.

If you are very studious about avoiding any sort of other carbs, except for nutrient-dense green vegetables, then you can probably remain in a ketogenic diet with one drink a day, assuming you are an average-height male. Women have it tougher simply because on average they're smaller and alcohol is typically not "sized" in terms of the size of the drink to match body size and mass. This means that for most women that first drink is going to be borderline. Your odds of remaining in a ketogenic state improve if you are engaged in a material amount of vigorous exercise daily (defined as at least 15 minutes of effort in heart rate zone 4 or 5) as well.

But beyond one drink it doesn't matter if you're trying to live a keto lifestyle. You will get knocked out of a ketogenic state with the second beer or mixed drink essentially every single time and it is likely to require 48 hours or even more to return to it.
Alcohol - almost always in the form of craft beer - is what is keeping me from going full keto. Gonna have to nut up and go cold turkey one of these days.
