Japan was open to MacAuthur’s ideas because they had just been nuked.

Their generals were not. They wanted to die with honor. Hirohito overruled them. The citizens were very happy with temporary U.S. occupation during rebuilding. They were sick and tired of all the restrictions that they were under during the war. They were finally free to spend their day as they wished.
I was friends with one U.S. vet (now deceased) who served during the occupation. He showed me a pic of him with a little boy in front of his dad's car factory. The boy grew up to run the company. His name was Honda.

I get his point with this but there’s also some stark differences between imperial Japan and Iran

Japan -

1. Everyone loved the emperor
2. Intelligent and high IQ people, not religious fanatics
3. Tojo went rogue and most of japans atrocities in the war were due to him, not orders from Hirohito. Tojo was convicted of war crimes and hanged.
4. We had just nuked them
5. Japan hadn’t spent 50 years hating us and sponsoring acts of terror against us
6. Japan has the industrial capacity to be a real military threat

Iran

1. Regime is hated by the people
2. Religious fanatics and less educated. Much harder to change their minds
3. Regime top to bottom supports acts of terror against us and wants to bring the Western world to its knees by any means necessary.
4. We have not nuked them nor firebombed anything nor hit civilian targets. Only military targets and leadership
5. Have been our enemy for 50 years
6. Doesn’t have the capacity to be a Germany or Japan level of military force even if they resent us and tried to build up. They’ve been building up for 50 years and we destroyed it in a couple months.

I guess that's one way to spin things. But I don't trust the radical regime leaders of Iran that replaced the now-dead radical regime leaders of Iran.

But I'm no foreign diplomacy expert and I'll just have to hope that the people running the show know what they're doing.

This would make sense if there was even the slightest similarity between a recently nuked Japanese population and our enemies in the Middle East.

It was trump that signed the unconditional surrender. This whole thread is bizarre.

This is not true at all.

Just yesterday, the PM of Pakistan was posting about the closeness between the two countries, and Saudi Arabia invited them to a forum to discuss regional development. Oman is cooperating with them on SOH operations, and Qatar wants to fund their reconstruction.

The only ME countries that have voiced opposition to Iran are Israel, UAE, Lebanon and Syria.

Meh.... The Japanese were brutal but they had honor. The fanatics in Iran wouldn't know honor if it was tattooed on their foreheads.

They kind of did, at least the "hating" part.

The US Navy attacked Tokyo almost 90 years prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was called the Perry Expedition, in case you want to research it.

Prior to that, Japan had been isolationist for 200 years.

They decided they needed to modernize, and it started a naval arms race between the US and Japan.

Something else to research is "War Plan Orange" - a plan that the US military drew up in 1911 for fighting a war with Japan. That was 30 years prior to Pearl Harbor.

So, they weren't "sponsoring acts of terrorism against us", but neither side trusted each other during the 90 years leading up to WWII. We were not allies during that time.

Maybe Trump is trying to play good cop with the food handout and such and let Bebe and Israel play the bad cop. Slick.

Plus he is selling our grain from their money to them. Win for the US farmer.

I'll believe this when I see an Iranian leader sitting on the deck of an American warship signing an unconditional surrender.

My grandfather spent several months in Japan after the war during the occupation. He was quartered with a family whose son was a rear gunner in the attack on Pearl Harbor. He'd taken a camera with him. My grandfather took some of the photos he'd sent back to his parents. Unique, one-of-a-kind pictures that no one else in the world has. I'll get them when by dad passes.

Anyway, my grandfather always said the Japanese people were thoroughly demoralized and defeated.

I'm not sure Muslims really have any "innocent civilians" when their ideology ingrained in them says to kill everyone that isn't a believer. They'll fight to the last just like the Japanese population would have. frick them people. They need to be as thoroughly broken as the Japanese were after the war.
