There is a way to avoid this, but for some reason people don't understand it.

They understand it and the inflation it would cause, among other issues regarding full faith in our currency (which, if that is hit hard, will make the deficit irrelevant)

Elon must not be that smart. I can cut $3T with my plans and with what I've discovered.

Without knowing the particulars here of the goal set, and understanding the rank dishonesty of the media, I wonder why the singled out discretionary as making this goal "impossible". As if cuts/freezes/waste reduction could not come from the much larger mandatory buckets as you've mentioned. The WH will obviously have more limited ability to force those kinds of changes, but there's plenty to work with.

Frankly, IDGAF if they miss this "goal" as long as something meaningful is done. The alternative was zero waste reduction and zero spending cuts.

People don’t want to hear it. But the blue ring has to be cut. Even if it is “your money”. You ain’t getting it back.

Correct. Or taxes will have to go up. More likely a combination of both.

Comments like this tell me you don't understand monetary policy and how it is connected to fiscal policy.

Mandatory is not mandatory one people decide it’s no longer mandatory.

So, besides your own, just how many write-in votes DID you get?

I'm sure cutting SS checks and medical care will go over great

Cutting spending is now the "RINO" position and MAGA wants to remove the debt ceiling. Just FWIW

The fact that DOGE exists kind of flies in the face of that.

Oh yea! That makes perfect sense! "MAGA wants to spend more of your money, taxpayer!" That's exactly why the deep state (trigger word for you, you stupid little monkey) tried to murder Trump twice. He wanted to give the administrative state "more" money.

It's amazing how much female logic you display on this board daily.

Any politician that proposes SS austerity measures never wins. It's politically untenable.

The alternative is just to insidiously up the voters taxes via inflation.

How is a topic about fiscal issues a troll?

Can we not talk about these things?

Why is SS first on the docket for cuts when according to the 2023 budget revenue and outlays is fully sustainable by $300 billion?

1/ because is the single largest government expenditure. See the graphic SFP posted. You can cut ALL discretionary spending and... you still run a deficit. That blue band... has to be cut. It's simple math.

2/ because of this...

3/ because the government "borrows" from the SS "trust fund" to pay for current liabilities. The idea that your SS contributions are some sort of separated funds is... a myth.

It's not a matter of what anyone says. The math and keeping entitlements off the table dictate the answer a priori.

Is there no money in defense spending, specifically Ukraine, Israel and Egypt?
Taking DoD to $0 won't make $1 trillion, muchless $2 trillion. While we should abolutely not be sending money to Ukraine, in scale of what we spend on SS, and our deficit... it's not that much.

Looks like congress needs to raise the Medicare portion of payroll taxes. The SS side is and has been totally sustainable.

Not to mention it's not practical at all to take the DOD to 0. I think the DOD needs to be cut significantly but that might be more like a 20% cut.
