For those who don't know his work, Diamond is the Pulitzer Prize winning author of Guns, Germs, and Steel, Collapse, and The Third Chimpanzee

A researcher has dropped a bombshell warning there's nearly a 50-50 chance civilization as we know it could crumble within the next quarter century.
Jared Diamond, an American academic and historian, has forecast that society might come crashing down by 2050.
Speaking to Intelligencer, he said: "I would estimate the chances are about 49% that the world as we know it will collapse by about 2050."
Diamond pointed out that fisheries and farmland across the globe are being "managed unsustainably", resulting in resources vanishing at a frightening pace.
He explained: "At the rate we're going now, resources that are essential for complex societies are being managed unsustainably. Fisheries around the world, most fisheries are being managed unsustainably, and they're getting depleted.", reports the Daily Star.
"Farms around the world, most farms are being managed unsustainably. Soil, topsoil around the world. Fresh water around the world is being managed unsustainably."
The Pulitzer Prize-winning author stressed that mankind needs to forge more sustainable practices by 2050, "or it'll be too late".
He cautioned: "With all these things, at the rate we're going now, we can carry on with our present unsustainable use for a few decades, and by around 2050 we won't be able to continue it any longer.

On a serious note, his predictions seem rather Malthusian, which always raises my suspicions. Humanity will find ways to allocate resources.

I'm not an environut. I am too dumb to really understand climate change/global warming science. But, when I started looking at some of the peak oil stuff about 20 years ago and just the basic math of oil/energy depletion, population growth, how we feed ourselves, and the fact the our economic system is based on infinite economic growth, I really became a doomer. That has never left me. I have serious doubts about whether we'll even be able to feed the masses or have lights on in 20 years. The conflicts in Russia/Ukraine and Iran may give us a preview of things to come if we get energy shocks.

Had to read Guns Germs and Steel in tenth grade, and Collapse in college. Pretty sure he had similar predictions decades ago.

Hes 89. Old people say this kind of shite so they feel better about dying.
Yes the world will see extreme hardship within the next 100 years but it wont be from a lack of food. Maybee control of farmland but not because our methods are "unsustainable".

That's not what he's saying. He's not saying we're outpacing our resources. He's saying our resources are being mismanaged to an extent that could be fatal for civilization.
