I have no problem with the outcome,but I'm not leaving my grandkids in an unlocked,running car while I go in a store.

Really? So this captain would prefer to recover the bodies of children before the body of a career criminal? I understand the stance against vigilantes, but get fricked in this case. I would have done the same thing, and so would have that captain if it were his kids.
